Chapter 4

Judging by the brows and eyes that were fifty percent similar to mine, this person must be the Wen Suinian described in the book.
The original owner’s blood-related brother.

But Wen Suinian would never look at me with worry.

In the book’s description, ever since the original owner returned to the Wen Family after recognizing her relatives, the one in the family who hated her most was him.

On the very day of her return, Wen Chuchu, who had usurped the original owner’s identity for eighteen years, ran away from home overnight.
After the family spent a troubled night searching for her, she was found drenched in rain, like a frightened fawn, wrapped in wetness, hiding in everyone’s arms and sobbing:
“Mom, Dad, Brother, I thought you didn’t want me anymore.”

Wen Suinian, heart aching, held her in his arms, then turned his head and roared at the original owner with a vicious expression:
“It’s all your fault, you bumpkin! Don’t think just because we’re blood-related you can take Chuchu’s place in the Wen Family.
I’m telling you, blood ties will never compare to eighteen years of being together every day and night!”

At that time, the original owner was wearing a cheap short-sleeved T-shirt, with a shabby bundle at her feet, standing in the splendid Wen Family living room. The cold air made her hair stand on end, and no one looked her straight in the eye.
Such an image of a country bumpkin out of place in a wealthy family was naturally despised by high society.
Without prior agreement, they all resented the original owner for abruptly appearing and shattering the Wen Family’s long-standing peace and tranquility.

From that day on, the original owner began a year-long span of humble fawning, just to regain the belated familial affection from the Wen Family.
But all she got in return was contempt in their eyes and labels like “country bumpkin,” “utterly disgraceful,” “unfit for the family’s status.”

Ultimately, after the original owner had repeatedly “framed” the innocent and naive fake heiress Wen Chuchu, she was finally kicked out of the Wen Family, left all alone with nothing.

And now I’ve come to shoulder this miserable fate.
Now, this road stripped of all color-the original owner will not walk it anymore.
And I don’t want to linger for even a minute more.

A strong smell of disinfectant filled my nostrils. With effort, I opened my eyes, tilted my head, and saw Wen Suinian’s slightly worried brows and eyes.
Excessive medical treatment turned my deliberate death-seeking into a clinging to life.
After finally encountering robbers, the knife missed its mark, bypassing all vital organs and leaving only a surface wound.
To fake death, I’d need to find another way.

In the original plot, Jiang He died at the hands of the robbers who never received the ransom.
But I don’t know where the deviation occurred-I also fell into the robbers’ hands, yet I survived perfectly well.
Was my cooperation not good enough?
Or was my determination to die not obvious enough?

The vividness of life was vexing, and Wen Suinian’s voice beside me was even more clamorous:
“Jiang He, if you weren’t always deliberately getting hurt to draw attention, I wouldn’t have ignored your cry for help.”

I retorted unhappily:
“Shut up!”

The original owner would have fawned on him meekly, but I won’t.

Sunk into the soft hospital bed, something rough against my neck was irritating. I reached up and tugged at it, discovering a worn-out safety charm.
Its outer cover was frayed, the faded dark red silk fabric held something hard inside.
Without the original owner’s memories, I only found the tattered thing a nuisance, so I tore it off and tossed it away, tracing a perfect parabola through the air.

Wen Suinian abruptly swallowed all the words he was about to say.
The small safety charm lay quietly on the floor, making his facial muscles twitch as he stared fixedly at my face.
Gritting his teeth, he said:
“Jiang He, this safety charm-you just threw it away like that?”
