Chapter 2
If they kill me, I can escape this new identity as a universally disliked person.
Although I feel sorry for the original owner who disappeared without a trace, I have no desire to cling to life in this world.
Before transmigrating, I was a corporate slave working nine to five. No parents or family, no friends or close girlfriends. All I had was the daily trudge between work and home, a solitary existence, and a weariness and confusion about the future. Until one time while jaywalking, I was hit by a car running a red light. In that moment, my heart was surprisingly calm, as if a faint light pierced through the darkness, taking me away from this suffocating life, easing my constricted heart that always felt like it was submerged in seawater.
Who knew, when I opened my eyes again, I’d switched to a hellish start.
At the same time, a book stood silently in my mind, telling me I had transmigrated into the universally disliked person in a group-favor novel. A true heiress who had been swapped at birth by the nanny. After enduring eighteen miserable years in an orphanage, she finally found her biological parents. Unfortunately, the false heiress, like a turtledove occupying a magpie’s nest, had already captured everyone’s hearts. The true heiress who returned after eighteen years of absence was far less dazzling than the radiant false heiress who was the group favorite. A swan that has mingled among crows for too long will have its feathers stained with dirty black, an indelible stain that can never be washed away. Yet a crow that has fallen among swans, under everyone’s daily cultivation, actually unfurls snowy white wings and blends in with the surrounding swans. After being despised by everyone as vulgar and unpresentable, the worthless true heiress was kicked out onto the streets. Meanwhile, everyone turned back to surround the noble and elegant false heiress, marveling at her resplendent feathers.
At the end of the book, there was only this brief, dismissive description:
– [That Jiang He, who strove so hard to win everyone’s attention, was finally swept out by the Wen Family. Penniless and wandering the streets, she died at the hands of kidnappers who never received the ransom.]
Seeing this, I cast hopeful eyes at the two kidnappers before me.
After I asked them to kill me, the car fell into an eerie silence again.
The two kidnappers with crew cuts put their heads together, muttering for a long while. However, they made a decision completely different from the original plot: they decided not to kill me, but to go rob a jewelry store for some quick cash.
The younger one asked worriedly: “Boss, didn’t we agree to only extort ransom? Suddenly switching to robbery… I’m afraid we’re not skilled in that line of work…”
The older boss was exasperated: “It’s all about getting money, what’s the difference? We just happen to have this person we caught as a hostage. We’ll grab the gold and run!”
A worried voice spoke: “What if we can’t get away?”
“No worries, bro. I’ve checked: the detention center in the capital has better food than elsewhere. I guarantee you’ll get your fill of oily, tasty stuff every meal. It won’t be a wasted trip flying you all the way here.”
The young crew-cut nodded in relief, then turned to my despairing face and threatened fiercely: “Behave later. If you obediently be our hostage and cooperate in the robbery, we’ll let you go afterwards.”
“Can you fulfill a small wish of mine?”
“Spit it out!”
I didn’t want to go through any extra plot at all. After the end of the book, there was no further description of me at all. With a sincere heart, I said earnestly: “Seeing as I’ve worked hard being your hostage, after you rob the place, could you also give me a stab and send me to the afterlife?”
“???”
