Chapter 4
Chapter 4
When Bai Xi calculated fortunes and cast divinations, he lowered his eyes and focused his mind, as if he had become an entirely different person.
In an instant, even the noisiest intersection seemed to slow down. The lazy, boneless air the young man had carried just moments ago vanished without a trace.
In its place was an ethereal, detached certainty, as though fate itself had gathered at his fingertips.
The woman left after thanking him over and over, and transferred him a large sum of money.
-Wait, he really knows how to do this??
People came and went. Quite a few had seen what happened here, and several gathered around to watch the excitement.
“Can you read mine too?”
“Do mine too.”
“Whoa! That’s accurate! Master, can I get your contact info?”
Bai Xi was young, handsome, and so uncannily accurate that his clients were completely convinced. Before long, he attracted even more passersby.
The crowd grew larger and larger, until there was actually a long line.
I was so busy just holding up the payment QR code that I couldn’t pay attention to anything else.
Money poured in like crazy all night.
The bullet comments were also going wild.
[Holy crap, that’s insane! Is he some kind of divine fortune-teller? Can he read mine too?]
[Hey, don’t laugh. When that handsome guy was telling fortunes just now, he really did have a bit of that transcendent immortal vibe.]
Watching from the side, I was utterly amazed.
What the bullet comments didn’t know, however, was that Bai Xi, whom they had just been frantically praising as “transcendent,” was now complaining to the System.
[Bai Xi: System Bro, who was it that tricked me into coming here to help out as a raider and conned me by saying I’d get to experience the life of a rich second-generation heir?]
[I was all ready to start throwing money around, and now you’re telling me this is “Starting Life in Another World from Zero”? I can’t believe I have to go back to my old trade.]
[System, rubbing its hands like a fly: I’m sorry, okay, great god-Brother Xi! Just call me your little bro~]
[Li’l ol’ me is still in the internship period. Please don’t complain to Lord Main System, waaah.]
-An Intern System and a half-baked raider?
I suddenly felt that the already confusing road ahead had become even more confusing.
Unexpectedly, though, Bai Xi had a very good temper. He said to the System:
[Forget it. We’ll take it one step at a time.]
Such a zen mindset.
By the time it was deep into the night, there were fewer and fewer people on the streets. I kept checking and rechecking the balance in the account.
Bai Xi glanced at the money. “Let’s pack up and go. This is enough to cover your food and lodging for a month.”
I paused.
“Are you… going to keep me?”
Bai Xi said, “I’m this broke already-though according to my calculations, the two of us are fated.”
“As it happens, we can help each other block deadly misfortune. From now on, I’ll tell fortunes, and you protect me. How about it?”
I froze for a moment, but adhering to the principle of “only a bastard refuses a bargain,” I still nodded.
Bai Xi took out his phone to book a hotel.
I immediately pressed his hand down!
“We’re already this poor. Don’t book separate hotel rooms!”
“Renting is cheaper! The monthly rent for a two-bedroom apartment is more than half cheaper than staying in a hotel for a month!”
We were already so poor we had practically nothing to our names. So what if a man and woman shared an apartment?
-It saved money!
Bai Xi sucked in a breath. “But it’s so late now. There’s no way to find a rental.”
“I can find one.”
I had spent more than ten years clawing my way through the slums.
I was extremely skilled at squeezing out freebies and finding the cheapest, most practical tricks poor people used!
I quickly searched through my memory. “I know a place. The deposit is only two hundred. Come with me!”
I dragged Bai Xi through twists and turns, checked out a place at lightning speed, and just happened to snag a decent two-bedroom apartment in a tenement building.
It was small, but it had everything.
The elderly landlord asked for two thousand. Bai Xi bargained it down to eighteen hundred.
I directly said, “Twelve hundred.”
It was fine to scam outsiders, but I had grown up in the slums since I was little.
After signing the contract, Bai Xi gave me an admiring thumbs-up.
At least tonight, we really didn’t have to sleep on the street.
