Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Xie Canghuai stormed off in a huff.
I was bewildered and asked Cui Tao, “Did I say something wrong?”
Cui Tao rolled her eyes. “Everything you said was right!”
As we were speaking, Xie Canghuai came back.
Cui Tao: “…”
It was nothing else; he just really wanted to take a concubine.
I told him no.
He shouted in anger, then started wailing like a whistling teakettle.
“I know I once promised you we would be a couple for a lifetime, but why can’t you have some pity for me? My immense talent has nowhere to be displayed…”
I waited for him to finish crying before turning up the pressure a bit more.
“Husband, you really aren’t as talented as you think you are.
“Perhaps your mother told you that? But she can’t even read.
“Every mother thinks her son is destined to be the Prime Minister, but in reality, there is always someone better…”
He stormed off again.
This time, he didn’t come back.
Me: “…”
That night, Cui Tao, who was sleeping on a pallet below my bed, tossed and turned all night.
In the middle of the night, she suddenly whispered as if talking to herself, “Your Highness, are you truly happy?”
I replied, “I’m quite happy. I just feel like my husband isn’t very happy.”
Cui Tao: “…”
The next day, I was planning to head out.
Just as I reached the outer courtyard, I saw Xie Canghuai accompanying a young woman carrying a saber as they strolled through the garden.
The two were chatting quite pleasantly.
Xie Canghuai suddenly turned his head and saw me, freezing instantly.
The woman was very proactive, stepping directly past him to approach me. “You must be Lady Xie. I am Song Yuer from the Governor’s Mansion.”
I smiled. “So it is Miss Song.”
Xie Canghuai immediately looked away, too guilty to meet my eyes.
But I wouldn’t dream of making things difficult for him.
So I said, “Husband, we have an honored guest, but I must go and inspect the autumn harvest today. I’ll have to leave Mother to entertain her properly.”
Song Yuer frowned. “You? Inspecting the autumn harvest?”
Xie Canghuai hurriedly explained, “My wife is skilled in agricultural matters; she often handles the autumn inspections on my behalf.”
Unexpectedly, Song Yuer became incredibly jealous because of this.
She said, “I suppose I cannot compare to you, Sister. I have nothing but a good family background.”
Xie Canghuai comforted her, “Don’t say that. You’re not like her; you aren’t built for enduring such hardships.”
Cui Tao really couldn’t hold it in and let out a loud snort.
We all looked at her in surprise.
Cui Tao said expressionlessly, “My apologies. I just passed gas. Please, continue.”
Song Yuer was furious.
Xie Canghuai quickly interjected, “Yuer, don’t be angry. A maid like this can’t be compared to those in your mansion. Her manners are poor…”
Cui Tao gave him a look of pure disdain.
We headed out the door.
We had two horses.
Cui Tao caught up to me. “This is too much! Is he planning to go over your head and force you to accept her?!”
I said, “The woman came here on her own.”
Cui Tao said angrily, “He’s acting like this and you’re still defending him! This blind man… I really can’t wait to give him a beating-”
But by then, we had already left the city.
I urged my horse into a wild gallop.
Her riding skills were much worse than mine, and she cried out in alarm.
“Your Highness, wait for me!”
