Chapter 11
Chapter 11
Currently, the happiest person was Cui Tao.
She even immediately wrote a letter to the capital to report the good news.
However, the moment the letter was sent out, I had a secret guard intercept it and bring it back to me.
I sent her out on an errand and stayed home to rewrite the letter, mimicking her handwriting.
Her original closing read:
“The Princess has divorced the son of the Xie family and will surely regain her former glory in the coming days…”
I changed it to:
“The Princess is deeply in love with the son of the Xie family. I fear she is blinded by her infatuation and will never regain her former glory…”
Then, I handed it back to the secret guard to be sent off.
Things had reached this point; there had to be an explanation.
I sent Cui Tao out and waited in Xie Canghuai’s room for him to return.
Who would have thought he would dally with Song Yuer until nightfall before finally coming home?
When he opened the door and saw me, he froze for a moment before immediately going on the offensive.
“Why didn’t you tell me you knew the Governor’s Wife? Did you do it on purpose just to watch me make a fool of myself?”
I had been waiting for so long that I was already irritated. I couldn’t even be bothered to use the mental script I had prepared earlier.
I cut straight to the point: “Is this the result you wanted?”
Xie Canghuai suddenly began to lash out.
“I had no choice!”
“Heaven gave me the talent of a scholar, so why was I born into a humble family? It has forced me to spend my entire life unable to even touch the mud beneath the feet of those noble scions!
“My mother was right-we should never have married.
“Dragons beget dragons, phoenixes beget phoenixes, and the sons of rats can only dig holes!
“The two of us being together is nothing more than dragging our future generations down into the abyss with us!”
His eyes were actually bloodshot by the time he roared out that last sentence.
I listened in silence, my mind slowly processing his words.
Seeing me remain speechless, he lost his nerve and rushed over to grab my shoulders.
“Shisan Niang, don’t be like this. I won’t abandon you. I’ll go and beg for a position as a high-ranking concubine for you. Yuer is a lady from a great family; she will agree to it…”
…Go to hell!
By the time I realized what I was doing, I had already delivered a massive slap to his face!
I hit him so hard he looked like he might have died for a second.
Xie Canghuai was slapped unconscious.
But at the same time, I calmed down.
…Actually, I hadn’t wanted to lay a hand on him.
Cui Tao and Shiyi couldn’t understand what I saw in him. Even Lu Qiuping felt the same way.
But matters of the heart are never easily explained.
I met him at the lowest point of my life.
People might say he was a social climber who sought power and prestige, but when he nearly lost his life to save me, I was nothing more than a wild woman in the wilderness.
That year, he was eighteen and I was sixteen. We were just a young man and woman in the first flush of love, giving no thought to weighing pros and cons.
Even later, as our feelings gradually faded, I truly wished the best for him.
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly how we reached this stage.
But it was indeed time to cut ties; to hesitate now would only invite further chaos.
