Chapter 10
Chapter 10
We entered the inner chamber and took our seats.
Lu Qiuping explained that this particular foster daughter of hers was different from the other ninety-nine; she had raised her as if she were her own child.
Previously, she had favored Xie Canghuai’s talent and scholarship, which was why she had allowed the girl to enter his household as a concubine.
But now, she had changed her mind.
She ordered her subordinates to draft a Divorce Agreement in public and had it brought before us.
“Sign this Divorce Agreement, and from this day forward, you will be my proper son-in-law.”
I sat there, motionless.
There was no way I was going to bail him out in this situation.
Madam Lu was very important to me-she commanded an army of a hundred thousand elite soldiers!
However, I had already dropped a very obvious hint that Madam Lu loathed those who tried to climb the social ladder through marriage.
Lu Qiuping’s test was as blunt and simple as it could be.
He should have…
At that moment, Song Yuer stepped forward to break the deadlock.
“My Lord, I am not a narrow-minded person. Sister can remain in the manor; I would only be taking the title of primary wife.”
Xie’s Mother immediately beamed with joy. “My son, you must not fail Miss Song and the Governor!”
Xie Canghuai picked up the brush and looked at me again.
Cui Tao suddenly let out a roar: “Just sign it already! What are you dawdling for?”
Xie Canghuai was so startled that his hand shook. His face turned pale as he stammered, “This shrew goes too far…”
With that, he signed the Divorce Agreement with a flourish of his brush, tossed it aside, and ran off to the side in a fit of sorrow.
The matter was settled.
I let out a deep sigh.
Sometimes, I really didn’t know what to say about him.
I wasn’t even sure which “shrew” he was cursing.
I had already told him that he wasn’t even good at being a social climber.
He just wouldn’t believe me.
And now, he had signed the Divorce Agreement for no reason at all.
Lu Qiuping called me outside.
Her gaze was sharp. “That man is nothing but a shameless scoundrel full of lies and desperate for quick success!”
Because I had refused to give in, Xie’s Mother had taken an alternative route, sending people to the Governor’s Mansion to spread rumors about me.
They called me things like a “country bumpkin” and “ignorant and jealous.”
Since Xie Canghuai had an excellent reputation as an official, everyone naturally believed them.
But she never expected that Lu Qiuping and I were old acquaintances.
Realizing she had been played for a fool, Lu Qiuping was livid.
Now, she said, “You won’t blame me, will you? No, you can’t blame me. I’m doing this for your own good.”
I interrupted her fretting. “I don’t blame you.”
In fact, I understood her way of thinking as someone in power perfectly well.
Lu Qiuping breathed a sigh of relief and added, “With your beauty and talent, you are more than worthy of a noble title. Wait until I pick someone out from the young men of my clan…”
I said helplessly, “There’s no need.”
She told me not to be “stubborn”!
She insisted she would find eight or ten sons of prestigious families for me to choose from, just so I could broaden my horizons!
Then she jumped up and ran off.
…She really was a remarkably agile pregnant woman.
