Chapter 6
Chapter 6
Shen Zhihan was stunned and said nothing.
I didn’t dare make a sound.
Chen Yu’s voice came through the speaker, crackling with static.
“President Shen, sorry to bother you. I can’t get a hold of Xu Ting. She said she was having dinner with you. I was wondering if you’re still together?”
“Huh?”
Shen Zhihan looked toward me in disbelief.
Anxious, I sat up straight and waved my hands frantically. I had never said that.
Chen Yu was baiting him.
Shen Zhihan understood my meaning. “I’m not having dinner with her. You must have the wrong idea.”
“Then perhaps I was mistaken… Sorry for the intrusion.”
“It’s nothing.”
Shen Zhihan curled his lip.
“However, Mr. Chen, if you can’t reach your wife, you should call the police station rather than randomly calling a stranger. It’s quite offensive, don’t you think?”
This time, Chen Yu’s voice went silent for a good while.
“President Shen, you aren’t married yet, so you don’t understand my situation. Waiting at home alone and calling people one by one to ask is indeed humiliating, but compared to such trivialities, I care more about where she is.”
He slowed his voice, emphasizing every word: “I care more about who is destroying my family.”
Shen Zhihan’s brow furrowed, and his smile vanished.
“So, has a man like me offended you?” Chen Yu actually sounded like he was laughing.
I signaled Shen Zhihan with my eyes, urging him to hang up quickly.
Shen Zhihan made an excuse. “I have to go; a meeting is coming in on my end.”
Chen Yu’s voice was eerily calm. “I never mentioned my last name was Chen.”
Shen Zhihan hung up as if he’d seen a ghost.
He slammed on the brakes, pulled over to the side of the road, and rolled down the window for some air.
“He thinks I’m the other man. That’s terrifying,” he muttered nonsensically. “The pressure in this line of work must be immense.”
I felt helpless. “You let it slip.”
“Did you marry Sherlock Holmes? You go for a drive, and he conducts an interrogation?”
I laughed self-deprecatingly. “An unhappy marriage produces excellent detectives.”
“Forget it.” Shen Zhihan pursed his lips, his voice displeased. “How did he get my number?”
“The business card you gave me. He confiscated it.”
“Then I’ll have to block him.”
Shen Zhihan looked down to swipe at his phone. A moment later, he looked up at me. “I sent you a WeChat request. Remember to accept it.”
I stood there, feeling a bit lost.
He had already broken up with Ran Ning, so why did he want to add me?
Was there any need for us to stay in touch?
Recalling everything that had happened today-especially the scene of Ran Ning kneeling to him-the image wouldn’t leave my mind.
Shen Zhihan was not a simple man.
I really didn’t want to have any involvement with him.
“Mr. Shen, I’m not divorced yet. We shouldn’t stay in contact.”
He paused, raising his eyes to look at me thoughtfully. “Hmm? What’s that supposed to mean?”
I chose my words carefully. “I’m a decent person.”
“…Oh, so I’m not decent.”
He let out a sigh and leaned back into his seat, neck tilted back, eyes narrowing slightly. “Your husband slept with my girlfriend. I didn’t even settle the score with him, yet he turns around to call and question me. You and I are perfectly innocent, yet I’m being insulted as a homewrecker for no reason… and now you’re saying I’m not a decent person?”
“I didn’t-”
He gave me no chance to speak.
“Look at my day. I have to work, I’m getting cheated out of money, I’m getting cheated on… I’ve seriously had it…”
He suddenly unbuckled his seatbelt, strode out of the car, walked around the front, pulled open my door, unclicked my seatbelt, and grabbed my wrist to pull me out.
“What are you doing?” I cried out in fear. “Shen Zhihan, this is a society ruled by law! There are cameras everywhere!”
Only then did I regret my actions. How did I dare get into his car? I didn’t know this man at all.
I had simply been blinded by his appearance, thinking he was a good person.
“You know this is a society ruled by law?” He forcefully pulled me to the front of the car and pressed me against the hood. “I finally take a break to have a meal, and I run into you drag racing in the mountains. Do you know the speed limit here is forty? How fast were you going?”
I blinked, trying hard to remember. “Eighty… eighty-five?”
“Eighty-five? If I hadn’t followed the traffic laws, you would’ve killed me!”
His palm landed on the back of my neck, forcing me to look at the spot where the cars had collided.
“Look at what you did to my car. And you won’t add me on WeChat? Are you planning to do a hit-and-run?”
I felt both ashamed and nervous.
“Boss Shen, I was wrong. It’s all my fault.”
Only then did he lean down, threatening me sharply in my ear, “Are you adding me or not?”
“I’ll add you! I’ll do it right now!”
“Pin me to the top.”
“…Fine.”
“Set me as a ‘Star Friend.'”
“…Why do I have to do that?”
Shen Zhihan paused. “My car is very expensive. I’m going to claim damages from you. Don’t try to ignore me.”
“Fine.” I chose to yield.
Black-hearted, wicked capitalist. He makes so much money, yet he still wants to claim damages from me.
That meal was for nothing.
And here I was, naively thinking I wouldn’t have to pay.
Shen Zhihan and I crouched by the mountain road while I took out my phone and operated it right under his nose.
“You can’t block me from your Moments.”
“…Fine.”
“I want to be pinned above your husband.”
I looked at him, my patience at its limit.
Shen Zhihan clapped his hands and stood up. “Never mind then. The husband comes first.”
We finally reached a truce.
