Chapter 5
Chapter 5
The entire room fell silent, so quiet that one could hear a pin drop.
“I… I’ve finished eating, so I’ll head back first.”
I couldn’t sit there a moment longer and fled the scene in a hurry.
To my surprise, as soon as I stepped out the door, I saw Ran Ning approaching from not far away.
She was definitely looking for Shen Zhihan.
I turned to avoid her, only to bump right into someone’s chest.
“Hmm?” Shen Zhihan took a half-step back, looking down at me. “Not full yet?”
I shot him a meaningful look.
“Ran Ning is here…”
Only then did Shen Zhihan notice the figure in the distance. He grabbed my wrist, shoved me into the car alone, and briskly shut the door.
Before he could get in himself, Ran Ning ran over and started talking to him.
I couldn’t hear the specifics of their conversation.
However, Ran Ning was crying throughout, appearing quite emotional. Meanwhile, Shen Zhihan kept his distance, speaking with an expressionless face.
I stealthily cracked the car door open just a sliver.
The man’s cold voice drifted in: “Back then, you said you wanted to learn piano so you could play for me once you learned.”
Ran Ning’s voice was choked with sobs, halting and broken: “I didn’t… those things you said… I don’t know if someone told you something…”
Shen Zhihan, however, remained devoid of emotion.
“It doesn’t matter who said it. Let’s just end it here.”
Just as he opened the car door and was about to get in, Ran Ning rushed forward a few steps and grabbed the door firmly. She actually dropped to her knees right there in front of Shen Zhihan.
“Mr. Shen, I know, I was wrong…”
I hadn’t expected someone as proud as Ran Ning to humble herself to such an extent.
Shen Zhihan gazed at her calmly.
“Don’t make this so ugly.”
At that moment, my phone chimed with a notification, startling me into muting it instantly.
Ran Ning froze, trying to peer into the car, but Shen Zhihan used his body to block her line of sight.
She understood, and her face turned ashen.
He got into the car, glanced at me, and silently rolled up the window.
“Eavesdropping?”
I avoided his gaze, my heart racing.
“You aren’t her father.”
“I never said I was. Just something similar.”
I was silent for a long moment. “How is it similar?”
Shen Zhihan pressed the ignition button.
“Sugar daddy. A literal ‘gold-provider father.'”
Me: “…”
The car began its descent down the mountain.
He slid his fingertip across the main console screen and played an English song.
I really felt like he was driving me crazy.
I never expected that reporting the affair would lead me straight to the mistress’s sugar daddy.
My first instinct was to apologize: “Sorry, my husband cuckolded you.”
“Ah, the perfect wife,” he suddenly remarked.
I was nearly fuming at his attitude and spoke with a forced, thin smile: “Mr. Shen, you seem to have a problem with me.”
“No. I just got cheated on, so this is how I talk,” he said, eyes fixed on the road. “I hope you can be understanding.”
He really had an answer for everything…
I replied in a low voice, “I got cheated on too. Why should I have to be the one to tolerate you?”
He turned the steering wheel with one hand, showing no sign of being offended.
“Oh, so you only tolerate your husband.”
“You-”
The car rounded a curve. Driven by inertia, I swayed slightly back into my seat, and my retort died in my throat.
A lush green mountain view burst into my field of vision.
The English song happened to reach its climax.
“I like driving this stretch of road the most,” Shen Zhihan said suddenly.
I quietly admired the mountain scenery.
But then my phone vibrated-it stopped, then vibrated again. Chen Yu was calling repeatedly.
Shen Zhihan noticed it too.
“He seems to be calling every ten minutes.”
I turned off the screen.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with him lately.”
Shen Zhihan glanced at me.
“People who cheat are more insecure than those who don’t. Because he knows exactly what he’s doing when he’s not picking up the phone.”
I was practically laughing from anger. “Does he actually suspect me?”
“It seems you haven’t planned on having a revenge affair yet.” He silently retracted his gaze.
I fell silent.
After a while, the music abruptly cut out as Shen Zhihan’s phone began to ring.
He looked at the number, frowned, and pressed the answer button.
“Hello?”
“Excuse me, am I speaking with President Shen’s assistant?”
His Bluetooth was connected to the car, so the voice came through the speakers. Almost instantly, I recognized who it was, and my body stiffened abruptly.
Why was he making this call?
Shen Zhihan was still completely unaware. “I am Shen Zhihan. How did you get my private number?”
The person on the other end fell silent for three seconds before his voice turned inexplicably cold and heavy.
“I am Xu Ting’s husband.”
