Chapter 5
Chapter 5
Night was about to fall, so we lit a campfire in front of the wooden cabin.
I asked around, but none of them had seen Dashun.
It looked like my only choice was to stay here for the night and search around the village tomorrow.
The group began eating dinner. I was alone and empty-handed, with nothing on me.
Zuo Hao had just been about to share some food with me when the girl named Ba Wuyue suddenly picked up a bag of supplies and handed it over.
I was a little surprised. The girl sat down directly across from me.
I was born with an unusual appearance, one frightening enough to scare people. Strangers generally wouldn’t come near me for no reason, let alone a young girl.
“The fire in you is very strong.”
Ba Wuyue stared fixedly at me. Even though the sky had gone dark, she still hadn’t taken off her sunglasses. “I’ve never seen anyone like you before.”
I still hadn’t figured out what she meant when Ba Wuyue went on, “Can you help me? I can’t catch a goat on my own. Help me catch one, and I’ll help you find your brother.”
“You know where Dashun is?” I asked, deeply puzzled.
Ba Wuyue shook her head. “I don’t. But I might be able to find him.”
With that, Ba Wuyue lowered her sunglasses a little. The firelight shone over, and in the pure black pupils she revealed, there seemed to be a cross-shaped crack splitting the center, faintly glowing white.
“My eyes can see many things that shouldn’t be seen.”
After saying that, Ba Wuyue pushed her sunglasses back into place. “As long as you can help me catch a goat, I’ll do everything I can to help you find him.”
“All right. I can help, but I can’t guarantee results,” I said to Ba Wuyue.
“If I find my brother first, we’ll leave this place immediately.”
Ba Wuyue nodded, showing no intention of forcing the matter.
Zuo Hao, however, sidled over with a grin. “Brother Long, if it’s convenient when the time comes, how about helping me out too?”
As we were talking, two more people returned from the distance.
They were the last two of the seven.
They were a couple, both college students. The guy was called Ren Meng, and the girl was Shi Yuhan.
Before they even came close, the sound of their arguing reached us first.
It seemed they had also come back empty-handed today. As they walked, the two of them kept blaming each other.
Once they approached the gathering spot, the first thing they saw was the black goat tied up there.
“There’s a goat here!”
The boy named Ren Meng lit up the moment he saw it, as if he’d spotted a long-lost relative. Too excited to care about anything else, he rushed straight over.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
Xu Da had been on guard the whole time. In two steps, he caught up and shoved Ren Meng away. “We caught this!”
Ren Meng wasn’t short either, but compared with Xu Da, he was much thinner and weaker.
Shi Yuhan hurriedly grabbed Ren Meng and dragged him aside to rest.
Only then did the two of them notice me.
“Who’s that? Don’t tell me someone secretly hired help.”
I heard the two of them whispering, but I couldn’t be bothered to explain.
