Ba Wuyue took off her sunglasses and stared at me for a long while.

Her brows drew tighter and tighter together. In the end, she could only sigh as if resigning herself to the truth. “I’m sorry, Brother Long. I can’t see anything.”

“But maybe that’s a good thing. There’s a very deep connection between you and your brother. If I can’t see any omen on you, then there’s a good chance he’s safe.”

Safe? Dashun’s hollow, drifting voice echoed in my ears again. “Brother Long, avenge me…”

Yet the group, preparing to rest, seemed to have grown used to it.

In the darkness, I went over Dashun’s situation again and again.

My anger and grief seemed to be locked in a constant struggle with the shred of clarity left in my mind.

I never should have taken a job this risky. I especially shouldn’t have brought Dashun along.

“Brother Long, the fire on you is in chaos.”

Ba Wuyue’s voice came quietly through the dark.

I looked toward the sound. Ba Wuyue had taken off her sunglasses. In the darkness, those strange eyes of hers stood out all the more.

“Brother Long, why do you think she wanted to hurt me?”

“Do you think she never left? That she’s been by my side this whole time?”

I knew who Ba Wuyue was talking about-the “friend” who had given her those eyes.

“Stop overthinking it. Get some sleep.”

According to Ba Wuyue, when she was meant to see something, she would see it.

Closing her eyes or wearing sunglasses was really just a form of psychological comfort, something to lean on so she wouldn’t be so afraid.

Forcing myself to stay alert, I comforted Ba Wuyue with a few words.

Only then did Ba Wuyue close her eyes and slowly fall asleep.
