Chapter 7

Director Zhang said Zhou Xi’s acting was average.

He overacted.

He did not look like a domineering CEO. He looked like a mistress.

But he was simply too good-looking, so he passed anyway.

The day before he joined the crew, I locked him outside my door.

“Sis, I want to repay you.”

“Thank you for giving me this chance and letting me enter the entertainment industry.”

I said, “If you really want to repay me, give me some peace tonight.”

Zhou Xi refused to give up and acted spoiled. “But I’m leaving tomorrow. I’ll be filming out of town for three months, and I won’t be able to see you.”

He stubbornly stayed and refused to leave.

I pretended not to hear him.

At last, there was no sound outside the door.

Three hours later, I opened it.

Zhou Xi was sitting against the door with a pillow in his arms and nearly fell in.

He woke instantly and slipped inside while I was unprepared.

In a flash, he was already lying on my bed.

“Sis, I won’t do anything. I’ll just hold you while we sleep.”

Fine.

I had not expected him to keep his promise, but he was surprisingly obedient.

Early the next morning, the driver took Zhou Xi to the airport.

Before leaving, he tugged off my nightgown.

Just as I thought he was about to do something, I saw him stuff my nightgown into his suitcase.

Half-asleep, I glared at him.

Zhou Xi dropped a kiss on my forehead.

“Sis, come visit me.”

I did not answer and pulled the blanket over my head to keep sleeping.

A month later, I received a gift from Zhou Xi.

Of course, during that month, I had not visited him once.

I did answer a few calls.

But I had been truly busy lately, and I hung up before even a minute passed.

The gift was a little bear.

Bright and colorful.

Childish and cheap.

Also a little ugly.

It was the first time I had ever received a gift from a lover.

Shi Jin, of course, had never given me one.

On Valentine’s Day, I had mentioned it casually.

In a high-end restaurant, I gave Shi Jin a watch worth one million, then asked him, “Do you have anything for me?”

Shi Jin said, “Do you still need me to give you anything?”

“You lack nothing.”

When he said that, he was not in a good mood.

Secretary Wang said that some time earlier, Shi Jin’s father had beaten his mother again, and his mother had come to the school to ask him for money.

I considered his mood and did not pursue his poor attitude.

The bear’s two eyes looked at me.

Like Zhou Xi.

They pulled me out of my memories.

The bear looked a little familiar, but I stared at it for quite a while without remembering what brand it was.

When it looked at me, I felt a trace of guilt.

Guilt for not visiting him on set.

Just as I was hesitating over whether to make a trip, I received a call from Shi Jin.

How rare.

Compared with Zhou Xi, who called three times a day, Shi Jin seldom contacted me first.

I answered the phone.

I did not speak.

The other side was silent for a long time too.

Perhaps realizing I would not speak first, Shi Jin finally said,

“I received your apology.”

“Let’s make up.”

I did not understand.

Then I glanced at the calendar on my desk and understood at once.

Today was Shi Jin’s birthday. Many luxury brands would deliver gifts to him today.

Of course, I had arranged it.

“I really liked that restaurant from last time. We can eat there tonight.”

Shi Jin paused, then continued, “I also have a few senior brothers and sisters from the lab. They’ll come too…”

I interrupted him. “I forgot to have Secretary Wang cancel it.”

“What?”

I said, “Consider those gifts your breakup fee.”

When I last saw Shi Jin, my mind had still been muddled, and I had forgotten to make things clear.

I did not have that much time to play games with him about why we broke up and got back together.

Spending time with him had not been all that pleasant either.

It truly was a money-losing deal.

But I was a gracious sponsor. What I had given, I would not ask back.

A fall into the pit, a gain in wisdom.

This taught me that in the future, when keeping pretty boys, I should not be so generous.

Too much generosity made people float.

Shi Jin seemed unable to accept what I had said.

“Cui Yuntan, are you still jealous?”

“Or is that man stirring things up? I’m telling you, he only has his eye on your money…”

I remembered.

The fabric of that little bear.

It was from Zhou Xi’s favorite pair of limited-edition pajamas.

He had made it into a little bear?

I picked up the bear and examined it carefully.

Crooked stitching, knots that had not been hidden properly.

Could Zhou Xi really have sewn it himself?

Interesting.

Shi Jin was still saying something, but I was no longer listening.

I casually hung up and instructed Secretary Wang to prepare for a set visit.

The private plane landed.

A business car took me all the way to the film crew.

I arrived at just the right time.

Zhou Xi was filming a scene opposite the female lead.

His eyes were full of affection, and his acting was very good.

The female lead seemed to have been shoved in by someone too. She was not a professional actress.

Facing Zhou Xi’s face, she froze three times, blushing red and not daring to look at him.

Zhou Xi was very kind and told her to take her time, not to worry.

A staff member beside me exclaimed softly, “I’m shipping them, I’m shipping them.”

Zhou Xi turned his head and saw me.
