Chapter 3
“Maybe he really does have a girlfriend,” I said to my silly little brother.
After saying that, I shifted my gaze away from him again.
That blinding playboy-red hair of his. Tsk.
“Impossible,” Zhao Xuwen said with absolute certainty. “I’ve been watching him for ages, and I’ve never seen any girls around him.”
Was that so?
My gaze fell on the young man warming up on the basketball court not far away, and the corners of my lips curved up ever so slightly.
“Sis, see the pretty girl in the white dress up ahead?” Zhao Xuwen lowered his voice. “That’s my goddess, Qu Ying.”
I looked over and saw a girl in a long white dress, her hair falling to her waist, holding a bottle of water as she watched in He Lin’s direction.
Zhao Xuwen’s resentful voice rang out beside me.
“What the hell is so great about He Lin? All he does is act cool. I’m not any worse-looking than him.”
I understood.
My self-proclaimed campus heartthrob of a brother, who had relied on his good looks since childhood and been secretly crushed on by all kinds of girls, had finally met the Waterloo of his life-
The girl he liked liked someone else, and that someone else didn’t like his goddess.
Which was why Zhao Xuwen found his love rival extremely irritating.
“Sis, just you wait,” Zhao Xuwen said, slinging an arm around my shoulders with a fierce look. “In a bit, I’m definitely going to teach that punk a lesson on the court. Remember to record my glorious moment on your phone!”
“…”
Before I could agree, the player in the black No. 9 jersey, who had been warming up on the basketball court, suddenly glanced toward the stands. By sheer coincidence, his gaze landed in my direction.
I was standing a little farther back in the crowd, so I wasn’t sure whether He Lin had seen me.
But his gaze stilled, staring straight this way, and his brows drew together.
In that instant, there seemed to be a trace of hostility in his eyes.
“Damn, is that punk provoking me?” Zhao Xuwen finally removed the paw he’d draped over my shoulder and marched toward the court, fighting spirit blazing.
He was holding the bottle of water I’d originally prepared for He Lin, and he still didn’t forget to greet his goddess and ask her to cheer him on.
Clearly, though, his goddess was supporting the team in black.
The game started very quickly. As soon as the whistle blew, I watched the players on both sides spring into action.
Both teams seemed quite skilled, and cheers frequently erupted around the court.
Some of the spectators were their classmates, who had specifically come to watch.
On the court, the two charging the hardest were none other than Zhao Xuwen and He Lin.
Zhao Xuwen had been all brawn since he was little. If our family hadn’t been well-off and he hadn’t lacked interest, we really could have packed him off to become an athlete.
“Why is He Lin playing so aggressively today…” a boy nearby muttered. The very next second, his voice shot up. “Beautiful! Three-pointer-”
Among the young men on the court, He Lin wore a black basketball uniform, yet he was an exceptionally vivid splash of color.
At least, that was how he looked to me.
The scores of both teams kept climbing, so it was no wonder the crowd around the court grew larger and larger. The game was thrilling to watch.
But then, without warning, an accident happened. When Zhao Xuwen took a shot, he accidentally collided with a nearby player. As he landed, he lost his balance and went down hard.
The scene instantly descended into chaos.
