Chapter 110
Chapter 110
The eyes were red.
Unlike those of an ordinary rabbit, they were exceptionally clear and pure.
They resembled two crystalline rubies!
They were beautiful.
The instant she opened them and saw me, wariness and vigilance flashed through them, along with a trace of hostility.
She instinctively tried to shield the little gray fox behind her.
I stepped forward and said calmly, “You don’t need to worry. If I were a rogue occultist, I would have killed you the moment I entered the cave, while you were still unconscious. Why would I wait for Huihui to wake you?”
She seemed to find my reasoning sound, and the little gray fox beside her kept explaining without pause. Before long, some of the vigilance faded from the enormous white rabbit’s eyes.
Of course, she still did not trust me completely.
Huihui looked from me to the rabbit. “Susu, big brother is a good person. He definitely won’t hurt us. He promised to treat the wound on your leg.”
The enormous white rabbit gave a soft snort, her ruby eyes fixed on me.
Then a clear female voice sounded in my mind.
“Little Huihui, you don’t even know his name, yet you stopped a stranger on the road and trusted him so easily? You’re much too naive. Even if I die, I won’t be able to stop worrying about you.”
Tears immediately filled the little gray fox’s eyes, and he cried loudly, “No! Susu won’t die. Susu will live for many, many years!”
Uh…
I scratched my head, speechless.
“Could you two stop acting out a tragedy? This isn’t a television drama. Rabbit, you’re lucky. I happen to carry rubbing alcohol and gauze, so I might actually be able to save your leg.”
I studied her enormous, horrifying wound.
Honestly, an ordinary rabbit–even a human–would certainly have died after leaving an injury like this untreated for so long.
But she was a spirit.
Judging by her size, she was probably fairly powerful too.
Even though I knew almost nothing about medicine, basic treatment might still give her a chance to survive.
When I saw her continue to hesitate, irritation rose in my heart.
Come on. I might have been curious about why these two possessed such unnaturally advanced cultivation, but I had still come to help, hadn’t I?
They were obviously the ones benefiting!
I snorted too.
“If your problem is that I haven’t introduced myself, then listen. My name is Wu Zhong.”
“Now I’ll count to three. If you still don’t trust me and won’t let me treat you, I’ll leave. I have no intention of pressing my warm face against your cold backside.”
I immediately began counting down.
“Three…”
The little gray fox grew anxious. He tugged at the white rabbit’s long fur with both paws and pleaded rapidly, “Susu, please trust Brother Wu Zhong. Your injury can’t wait any longer. I don’t want you to die. Boo-hoo-hoo…”
Animal whimpers emerged from his mouth, but through his thoughts, I heard him crying.
That was the truth about spirits in the real world. They were nowhere near as powerful or frightening as novels and television dramas made them seem.
After suffering a serious injury, this one could not even treat or bandage herself.
She had to seek help from a human.
“Two…”
The enormous white rabbit finally released several weak cries. A faint thought entered my mind and became human words.
“Young Mr. Wu Zhong, my name is Bai Su. Please treat me.”
Bai Su?
That was a nice name.
I thought, “A wild rabbit couldn’t have chosen a name like that, could she? Did she escape from some powerful practitioner’s home?”
But this was clearly not the time to ask. At the very least, I needed to treat her leg first.
Before starting, I told the enormous rabbit named Bai Su that after I treated her, I would ask several questions. She had to swear to answer them if she knew the truth.
She agreed.
I removed rubbing alcohol, sterile gauze, and a sharp dagger from my backpack.
When the dagger appeared, a trace of wariness and unease clearly flashed through her eyes. But in the end, she said nothing.
I disinfected the blade with alcohol, then looked at her.
“Let me be clear. I’m not a doctor, and I don’t know medicine. I only understand basic disinfection and bandaging. If it hurts, you’ll have to endure it.”
The rabbit’s face formed an unexpectedly human, bitter smile.
Her clear voice sounded in my mind.
“I understand. Begin. I can endure this small amount of pain. I certainly won’t scream and interfere with you…”
Two seconds later…
Screeeeeech!
The rabbit’s shrill screams echoed through the cave.
I stared at her in disbelief.
What happened to enduring this small amount of pain? Why was she screaming like a pig being slaughtered for New Year in our village?
Besides, I had only dabbed alcohol around the edge of the wound. I had not even used the knife yet!
I had no doubt she would shriek to high heaven once I actually began cutting away rotten flesh and draining the wound.
With no other choice, I stopped and told her, “Miss Bai Su, you’re screaming so loudly that I can’t treat the wound. I think I need to place a Silencing Talisman on you. Unless you or Huihui know a similar art and can use it yourselves?”
Huihui answered weakly from beside us, “Brother Wu Zhong, Susu is already very weak and has almost no arcane power left. I haven’t learned any arts yet. Please do it for us.”
“All right!”
I took a talisman from my pocket and slapped it onto the rabbit’s forehead, preventing her from making any sound. Then I continued treating the wound.
She stopped screaming.
But while I cut away the rotten flesh, her furry body trembled beyond her control. Large crystalline tears streamed from her ruby eyes, making her look rather pitiful.
The best solution would have been a Pain-Numbing Talisman, which would have eliminated the pain entirely.
Unfortunately, that talisman was somewhat more advanced, and I had not learned it yet.
I worked for over half an hour before finally finishing with the long, deep wound on her leg.
I had no needle or thread, so I could not stitch it closed.
All I could do was wrap gauze tightly around the leg, compressing and binding the injury so the wound would barely remain shut.
As I had said before, she was a spirit–and a fairly powerful spirit for the modern age.
Her vitality and physical resilience were certainly extraordinary!
With the correct treatment and some endurance on her part, she should recover.
Whew!
I released a long breath of turbid qi and collapsed onto the cold cave floor.
Wiping sweat from my forehead, I muttered, “Miss Bai Su, treating and bandaging your wound took more energy than a full battle against corpse-fiends, ghosts, and rogue occultists. It was exhausting.”
The little gray fox immediately rushed to my feet and rubbed his furry head against my leg.
“Thank you, Brother Wu Zhong.”
“Thank you, Mr. Wu.”
The rabbit must have felt better. She thanked me in a weak, hoarse mental voice.
She had apparently screamed so hard that even the voice carried by her thoughts had gone hoarse…
I found it amusing. “So when a spirit loses her voice, even her mental communication reflects it? Interesting.”
