Chapter 5

The bedroom door closed, and once again, I was the only one left in the spacious room.

But I couldn’t fall asleep anymore.

When people had nothing to do, it really was easy for their thoughts to start wandering.

My marriage to Zhao Suiyu had lasted six years as of this year.

Strictly speaking, it hadn’t started because of love or romance.

My family’s cash flow had run into problems, and that father of mine came up with the idea of selling off his daughter. During that period, I appeared at matchmaking dinners with alarming frequency.

I had no choice. I hadn’t even graduated from university yet. All it took was one threat to cut off my cards, and I had to behave.

Of course, I also had a half-sister back then, born to the same father, only a year younger than me. She never had to worry about such things.

My mother passed away early. Even though she knew her husband hadn’t exactly been faithful outside the home, she probably never imagined that not long after she was gone, a woman would show up at the door with a heavily pregnant belly and a daughter in tow.

I had been too young then. As my legal guardian, my father had also taken charge of the inheritance my mother left me.

What made me agree to those matchmaking dates wasn’t just the threat of cutting off my cards, but also my mother’s inheritance.

That scheming father of mine promised he would give it to me as my dowry.

A business marriage wasn’t really that big of a deal. Even if you stayed married for years, you could still get divorced.

But Zhao Suiyu was an unexpected delight.

Compared with the collection of misfits and duds I’d been shown, he stood out by a mile.

If I had to get married, even an idiot would know to pick the best one.

Back then, I overcame my awe for this favored son of heaven and took the initiative for a while.

Zhao Suiyu was twenty-four at the time and had already begun taking over the family business. He was an only child, the undisputed Heir of the Zhao Family. His looks, figure, education, and wealth were all impeccable.

With that royal flush of external advantages stacked together, I would have accepted him even if he were impotent.

Of course, after our wedding night, Zhao Suiyu cleared his own name on that front.

Only, back when we were about to get married, my half-sister seemed ready to grind her teeth to pieces.

Ever since we were little, she had liked to outdo me in everything.

I was grateful to Zhao Suiyu. After the marriage was settled, Zhao Corporation confirmed a partnership with Su Corporation. My father solved his urgent crisis, and then, seemingly under his wife’s pillow talk, he began evaluating which daughter this son-in-law should marry to maximize his profits.

Naturally, it wouldn’t be me. I had no attachment to that family.

At the time, Zhao Suiyu and I weren’t familiar enough for me to ask anything of him.

But one day, Zhao Suiyu held my hand in front of the Su Family villa and made his stance clear before that family of four:

“Uncle, I hope you understand that I am marrying Su Xu. Not just anyone from your Su Family will do. If anything else improper happens, I will reconsider the cooperation between our families.”

He took it upon himself to ask that father of mine for the inheritance and keepsakes my mother had left behind.

It was just that some of the jewelry had already been worn by other people, which felt terribly unlucky.

And in the blink of an eye, six years had passed.

Getting pregnant with my daughter hadn’t exactly been an accident, either. Back then, I had deliberately planned to have a child.

A man’s strongest, healthiest years were only so many. The child’s father’s genes were right there, but who knew if he might pick up some bad habits in a few years? Having a healthy baby while this man didn’t smoke or drink excessively was more important than anything else.

And that was how little Zhao Yue came along.

Six years later, Zhao Suiyu still hadn’t picked up any bad habits. He didn’t smoke, and only drank when he had business engagements or plans with friends, and even then, only in moderation.

Combined with his looks and his money, he truly deserved to be called a real catch.
