Chapter 65
Chapter 65
I clutched my forehead as I walked into the Little Buddha Hall.
This small courtyard was quite secluded, nestled behind a grove of fishpole bamboo. It was said that many years ago, Yuan Heng’s mother used to copy sutras and pray to Buddha here.
After the old madam passed away, the courtyard had been locked, and no one had set foot in it for years.
Even though Steward Li had ordered people to clean it through the night, it still looked desolate and bleak.
Yun Sheng’s coffin was placed in the center of the room, the doors wide open. I sat on a faded, old chair, staring blankly out at the pitch-black courtyard.
Cuinong leaned down, using a handkerchief to wipe the blood from my head as she cursed under her breath. “That monk committed suicide because of him, yet he’s taking his anger out on you. Ten thousand copies of the Earth Store Sutra… you couldn’t finish that in ten years!”
I winced and pulled back from the pain, my hand lightly brushing over Cuinong’s stomach. “He must have kicked you hard,” I asked softly.
Cuinong shook her head, tears falling like rain. “It’s nothing. I just feel so sorry for you.”
Just then, Meng Huaiqing entered from outside, carrying his medical bag.
He gave me a cold look before taking out various medicines and cotton cloths, walking over to clean my wound.
“There’s a small gash about the size of a fingernail on your head. The bleeding has stopped. Just apply the medicine every morning and evening.”
He applied the ointment as he spoke.
I sat there woodenly, not saying a word.
Meng Huaiqing sneered. “You brought this on yourself. I told you yesterday that your life from now on would be very ‘exciting.’ This is only the first day.”
“Brother Meng,” I called out softly.
Meng Huaiqing’s hand paused.
I could clearly feel his touch become much gentler as he applied the medicine.
I leaned wearily against him, sobbing uncontrollably.
He wrapped one arm around me, gently patting my shoulder. “Does it hurt?”
I nodded aggrievedly. “Can you help me get a poison? The kind that can’t be detected, but can kill him silently?”
Meng Huaiqing stiffened and let go of me.
He looked at me as if wanting to say something, but in the end, he hurriedly packed his medical bag. Leaving behind a brief “take care of yourself,” he lowered his head and departed.
I let out a cold laugh and wiped my face with a handkerchief. What a waste of a few tears.
Cuinong crouched by my legs and whispered, “He’s too shrewd. Why don’t I go out of town to find a good doctor to mix a potion? If this continues, the Marquis will eventually torment you to death.”
I stroked Cuinong’s hair. “Don’t dirty your hands. If Meng Huaiqing won’t do it, there are others. There is also one more very important matter.”
My head throbbed as if pierced by needles. I closed my eyes, fighting back a wave of nausea. “Before I send him to the afterlife, I have to sleep with him one more time. Have your Old Li prepare some things.”
