Chapter 59
Chapter 59
I feigned worry. “Marquis, you’re awake. How do you feel?”
Yuan Heng’s head hung weakly, his voice raspy. “Where is Yun’er?”
His hand trembled as he raised it, staring at the bloodstains on his sleeve in silence.
No one present dared to answer. Finally, Eunuch Gao stepped forward tentatively, advising softly, “Marquis, please try to accept this. Tomorrow, the Empress Dowager…”
Yuan Heng spoke up abruptly. “Who just said he should be laid to rest? Is he dead?”
He looked extremely confused and dazed. He threw back the covers and got out of bed, searching everywhere in the room before suddenly stopping. “Who just said he was a demonic person?”
As he spoke, he stared straight at Eunuch Gao. “Was it you? You want to cremate Yun’er?”
Eunuch Gao waved his hands repeatedly, coaxing him like a child. “You’re too tired; you misheard.”
I knew that Yuan Heng was currently an out-of-control beast; there was no reasoning with him.
Besides, my staying behind to care for him was merely for show for the palace people. There was no need for me to stick my neck out and invite trouble.
However…
If I am to win this game, I must also consider the future, mustn’t I?
I stepped forward and supported Yuan Heng, secretly gesturing to Eunuch Gao behind me to leave quickly.
“Do not be anxious yet,” I said softly, rubbing Yuan Heng’s back. “Concubine will help you sit down.”
Yuan Heng pushed me away irritably, intending to find trouble with Eunuch Gao again.
Suddenly, as if remembering something, he spun around and approached me step by step.
“Everything was fine, so why did Yun Sheng suddenly come to the manor?”
I backed away. “How could this concubine know that?”
Yuan Heng grabbed my collar and yanked me toward him.
“Why did he call you Ye Family Younger Sister?”
“Why did he only speak to you when he came to the manor?”
“Why did he make red bean cake for you?”
Yuan Heng shook me like a madman, his eyes bloodshot. “What did he whisper in your ear at the end? He was fine before, so why did he commit suicide the moment he saw you! You killed him!”
I struggled to break free. “This concubine doesn’t even know who that Little Master was, let alone having met him!”
Yuan Heng’s eyes looked ready to burst as he pushed me away with great force.
I stumbled backward several steps.
Seeing this, Cuinong tried to grab my arm but missed. She quickly used her strength to support me from behind.
As I stood up, my ankle twisted. I fell sideways, my stomach slamming into the corner of a square flower stand.
“Madam!” Cuinong cried out in shock, rushing over to wrap her arms around me from behind, frantic with worry. “Are you alright?”
I forced a smile and waved my hand. “I’m fine.”
My stomach was in excruciating pain. I gripped Cuinong’s hand tightly. Lowering my head, I glanced sideways to see that Cheng Wei was also looking at me.
He quickly averted his gaze and stepped forward with a few strides to restrain the still-raving Yuan Heng.
“Ah Heng, get a hold of yourself.” Cheng Wei sighed, trying to force Yuan Heng back toward the bed. “The Empress Dowager is very worried about you. You must look after your own health.”
Yuan Heng shoved Cheng Wei away. “What kind of thing are you to dare call me Ah Heng? Are you worthy?”
His body swayed as if he were drunk. He suddenly reached out and drew Cheng Wei’s Zhanmadao. “Yun Sheng hated you most of all. It must be because you didn’t cut off your hand that he grew angry. I must send you to him to apologize!”
As he spoke, Yuan Heng swung the blade madly at Cheng Wei.
Cheng Wei dodged to the side, circled behind Yuan Heng to pin him down, and shouted at Meng Huaiqing, “The Marquis is out of his mind right now! Do something, damn it!”
Meng Huaiqing took a medicinal pouch from his medical chest, ran over quickly, and pressed it against Yuan Heng’s face.
Yuan Heng, who had been struggling wildly just a moment ago, soon went limp and slumped toward the floor.
The pain in my stomach was so severe that I could no longer hold myself up, and I collapsed onto the ground.
“Oh, heavens!” Cuinong was worried sick. She held me from behind and shouted at Meng Huaiqing, “Mister, please come and see Madam! She’s not well!”
Cheng Wei helped the unconscious Yuan Heng onto the bed and instructed Meng Huaiqing, “Go over there and check…”
To my surprise, Meng Huaiqing shook his head with a cold face, refusing with seamless logic. “I am not skilled in the department of women and children; I would only cause trouble. Quickly, have Steward Li fetch a proper physician! Right now, the Marquis is the priority. If anything happens to him, none of us in this room will have a good time.”
Hearing this, I smiled.
You really are something, Meng Huaiqing.
