Chapter 4

Bai Ruohuan woke with a start from a nightmare. In the dream, a human face had grown out of her pillow and kept yapping at her.

She patted her chest twice. Then, all at once, her movements froze.

She realized she was lying on the floor, and standing ramrod straight in front of her was a porcelain pillow. Outside, the sky was still dark.

Bai Ruohuan’s face slowly went deathly pale.

Before she could faint again, I made a snap decision, grew a hand, and pinched her philtrum for dear life.

“No fainting!”

“This is a dream.” Bai Ruohuan squeezed her eyes shut, her lips trembling.

“It’s not a dream,” I said, gently patting her beautiful little face.

Even if it were a dream, when you woke up, it would still scare you stiff.

She shook even harder, refusing to open her eyes no matter what. Tears streamed down her face. There was no communicating with her at all.

Damn it. Had this woman’s beauty been bought by sacrificing every last ounce of courage and intelligence she possessed?

I held back for a moment, then had no choice but to slip out of the porcelain pillow and take on my true form.

“Open your eyes!” I snapped. “If you don’t, I’ll tear your eyelids off.”

Only then did Miss Bai open her noble eyes.

She looked at me. Her eyes lit up, and a pink flush bloomed across her cheeks.

For some reason, under that gaze, a chill ran down my spine.

Before I could take a step back, Bai Ruohuan suddenly reached out and hauled me over.

Hugging me, she said in an excited tone, “Little sister, you look so familiar to me. Have we met somewhere before?”

“If you’d told me earlier you looked like this, I would’ve opened my eyes.”

She fondled me like she couldn’t bear to let go, touching my face one moment and squeezing my hands the next. Then she asked eagerly, “How long have you been a Pillow Immortal, little sister? Are you my Pillow Immortal alone?”

What the hell was with the “little sister”? Wasn’t there something wrong with this script?

Heroine, your character setting has completely collapsed!

It took me a tremendous amount of effort to rescue myself from her clutches.

Bai Ruohuan was still gazing at me in a daze.

I instinctively crossed my arms over my chest and swallowed. “Remember this. In three days, when you go with your mother to White Horse Temple to pray, you are not allowed to go to the back mountain.”

That way, you won’t meet Liang Qingci.

“Come with me, and I’ll listen to you,” she agreed with a beaming smile.

Three days later, I followed Bai Ruohuan and her party up to White Horse Temple.

Aside from Bai Ruohuan, no one could see me. I kept my eyes fixed firmly on her.

To her credit, she kept her word. After paying her respects to the Buddha, she obediently stayed outside the hall and went nowhere. With nothing else to do, she just stared at me.

Her staring made me uncomfortable all over. At long last, we made it to the afternoon, and it was time to descend the mountain.

Bai Ruohuan trailed near the back of the group, secretly holding on to my sleeve.

It was early summer. Along the mountain path, silk trees were in bloom, their blossoms like clusters of flame.

Bai Ruohuan was in high spirits, and I was happy too.

I hadn’t expected everything to be this easy.

As if.

The very next second, just after we passed a bend in the road, a master and servant appeared before us. The master had a gloomy air about him, like some sickly ghost wasting away from consumption.

Wasn’t this our toothless male lead from the last life?

Heh.

Last time, he had clearly been at White Horse Temple early in the morning. That was how the two of them first met at dawn on the back mountain.

The attendant beside him saw Bai Ruohuan and looked stunned by her beauty. Liang Qingci, on the other hand, showed no reaction at all and continued up the mountain as they brushed past us.

Maybe it was my imagination, but as he left, he seemed to glance at me.

I turned to look at Bai Ruohuan. Well, well. That familiar pink flush, those shining eyes.

She murmured, ostensibly to herself, but really for me to hear, “He looks so familiar to me. Have we met somewhere before?”

Why was that your go-to line for everyone you met?

If we hadn’t been in public, I really would’ve given her two big slaps she could savor.

I sneered. “Indeed. You’ve loved him for three lifetimes.”

“Have I?” Bai Ruohuan looked utterly lost.

“Yes. Right now, it’s love at first sight. Next comes him running, you chasing, and fate making sure neither of you can escape even if you sprout wings.” And dragging me down with you.

Furious, I flung my sleeves and stormed off.
