Chapter 15

The return high-speed train ticket was for 1 PM.

Uncle Wu brought Big Yellow to the bridge to see me off.

Big Yellow lay quietly at Uncle Wu’s feet, watching me with wet, reluctant eyes.

As soon as I called, he broke free from the leash and came trotting over, tail wagging happily.

I crouched down and pulled him into my arms, hugging him tight.

“Big Yellow, Big Yellow, you have to behave, okay? Big Sister will come back to visit you next time she’s home.”

He seemed to understand, yet also didn’t, nipping at my sleeve and pulling me back.

I couldn’t help but smile, though a little troubled. Why was he so disobedient today?

I gently tugged my sleeve out of his mouth, crouched down again, and held his fluffy head in my arms, ruffling it hard.

“Be good, Big Yellow. Big Sister is going to miss her train.”

I stood up resolutely, avoiding his gaze.

Somewhat cruelly, I said, “Uncle Wu, you all should head back. I’m leaving now.”

Uncle Wu led Big Yellow away into the distance.

Big Yellow wagged his tail, looking back at me every few steps.

I let out a deep breath of cold air and walked up to Xu Ge, whose eyes had been on me the whole time.

“Let’s go.”

When Xu Ge and I got home, we happened to run into Brother Wu coming by the Xu Family’s place to hang out.

“Where did you two go to play these past couple days? Why was nobody home all day yesterday!”

Brother Wu shouted in his loud voice as soon as he walked in.

I cheerfully held out the sweet osmanthus cakes I’d brought back from W Town.

“Brother Wu, Brother Wu, I bought you something good-try it!”

“Not bad, it’s still my little sister who thinks of me when she goes out and brings her brother a treat.”

He shoved one into his mouth, then immediately spat it out: “Pap pap pap! What the hell is this stuff? So nasty.”

“Geez, sis, don’t tell me you got scammed by some tourist trap. Honey, you bought a whole bag? Are you dumb or rich or something?”

After saying that, he carelessly tossed the remaining cake into the distance.

The white pastry landed in the trash can that had just been fitted with a new black garbage bag.

I watched, my mouth opening, but I didn’t know what to say.

“Who told you to throw that away?”

Xu Ge’s displeased voice sounded from behind me.

Brother Wu laughed indifferently: “Since when did you, Young Master, become so frugal? What, is your family about to go bankrupt? Getting ready to tighten your belts and live the hard life? Oh wow, holy sh*t, sh*t, sh*t…”

Xu Ge picked up the piece of cake, pried Brother Wu’s mouth open, and stuffed it right in.

“I’d say you’re not going to die from poisoning today.”

“Cough cough cough cough…”

Brother Wu choked and teared up, I hurriedly brought a cup of warm water over.

But Xu Ge blocked me.

“No.”

Xu Ge’s slender fingers pinched the rim of the cup, he tilted his head and took a sip, looking at Brother Wu with a cold sneer.

“Let him choke to death.”

Only after Brother Wu finally got his breath back did Xu Ge leisurely pour a cup of tea and unhurriedly hand it to him.

Brother Wu gulped it down, wiped his mouth, and pointed at Xu Ge accusingly.

“Before, when I said you were a sister complex, I was just joking around. What, today you’re making that title official or something?”

Xu Ge ignored him, sitting on the armrest of the sofa, his long legs naturally parted on either side.

He looked down and took a sip of water.

Behind the cover of the cup, he seemed to glance up at me, his eyes carrying an inexplicable smile.
