Chapter 3

My manager, Yang Yi, dragged me out of bed.

“Yu Xia, what is going on with you? How did you suddenly get involved with Zhou Dushu?”

I told her the truth. “We grew up together.”

Yang Yi clearly hadn’t expected that, but she also breathed a sigh of relief.

“I thought you were secretly having a thing with him. You scared me to death. In that case, we can spin this as a childhood-sweethearts promise…”

“Not yet, but soon.”

“What?”

I smiled happily.

“I mean having a thing. Soon.”

Following my memories, I found Zhou Dushu’s private Weibo account.

At this point, no one had dug it up yet.

His latest post had been made after that phone call ended.

2018-1-1 00:01

[So it was me after all.]

I couldn’t imagine how Zhou Dushu had spent that New Year’s Eve in my previous life.

Maybe he had been disappointed.

I was lost in thought.

Yang Yi frowned tightly. “Do you have any idea how much trouble you caused for our follow-up work by calling Zhou Dushu on your own last night?”

I crouched on the chair with my knees hugged to my chest and raised an eyebrow at her.

So?

“How are we supposed to explain this to Chen Nuo’s side? We agreed to keep the CP hype going, but what you did last night was basically the actual person involved slapping the whole thing in the face!”

“Then we won’t hype it.”

“What?”

“There’s no need to hype a CP. That drama was an ensemble piece to begin with. Everyone had their shining moments. Chen Nuo and I weren’t the only ones who got popular from it. Besides, he has a modern romance drama airing soon. When that happens, they’ll inevitably have to separate us anyway. It’s a hassle.”

In my previous life, during a program recording, Chen Nuo had suddenly avoided all contact with me from start to finish, forcibly cutting off the CP and causing no small amount of trouble for the collaborations that came after.

If that was how it was going to be…

Then it would be better not to start at all.

The next time I saw Zhou Dushu was when I went to visit the set of his music variety show.

Wearing a baseball cap and a mask, I stood by the curb and called him.

He picked up just as quickly as before.

“Yu Xia.” He sounded a little tired.

After that somewhat incoherent phone call last time, I hadn’t contacted him again.

I hadn’t answered his calls in the meantime either.

There were some emotions I needed to sort through myself.

Myself.

Alone.

“Zhou Dushu, I’m at the backstage entrance of your variety show recording. Can you send someone to pick me up?” The corners of my mouth couldn’t help lifting.

Even I was surprised. So it turned out I was looking forward to seeing him this much.

“You… you came to see me?”

How strange.

Both times we had spoken on the phone, his voice had sounded a little choked.

“Mm. I came to see you.”

Zhou Dushu didn’t keep me waiting long.

He came to get me himself.

He was wearing only blue jeans and a white sweater, which was clearly somewhat disrespectful to winter.

But he looked bright and full of spirit.

For a moment, I froze.

Honestly…

In my previous life, I had always deliberately avoided meeting people from the past. Even at annual galas and major events, I never went to look for Zhou Dushu’s figure.

So the rumors about Zhou Dushu and me collapsed on their own when the two people involved had zero interaction.

And the next time I saw him was right after I died.

His hair had gone mostly white.

I hadn’t had any friends when I was alive. Clearly, he was the only one who could take care of what came after.

Back then, he had been dejected and helpless.

He was a far cry from the Zhou Dushu standing in front of me now.

I took a deep breath.

I held back the sting in my eyes.

Then I took the initiative to walk over and hold his hand.

He stiffened for an instant, but only for that instant.

Then he gripped my hand firmly in return.

“If there are dating rumors, would you mind?”

After all, I wasn’t sure whether any paparazzi had followed me on the way here.

“I’m seriously looking forward to it.”

Pfft.

My childhood friend, the top celebrity I had long since cut ties with, did something completely out of character.

He canceled every job and shut himself away...
