Chapter 4

Since I already suspected Wanting, I couldn’t afford to doubt these two ghosts at the same time.

Moreover, the lessons from the previous two times I lost my wealth were constantly hammering at my nerves.

If I missed this opportunity again, I wouldn’t just be losing wealth-I would be losing my life.

So, I decided to take the risk.

At the very least, Meng Po was a legitimate deity of Hell.

I believed that no ghosts or monsters would dare to come out and cause trouble during the Meng Po Festival.

Thus, I found the nearest Meng Po Temple on the map.

The next morning, I went there early to burn incense and pray.

To my surprise, it turned out to be a very dilapidated little temple.

It had clearly gone without offerings for a long time.

There were only some moldy fruits and pastries left on the altar.

Only then did I realize that people didn’t actually have much faith in Meng Po.

I saw that the interior was thick with eerie yin energy, so I didn’t dare stay for long.

I simply burned some incense, kowtowed, left a hundred yuan in Offering Money, and hurried away.

Just as I stepped out the door, I ran into a hunchbacked old woman.

“Little girl, do you want some milk tea?”

My heart fluttered with panic.

This had to be Meng Po.

I immediately knelt down and kowtowed three times, then took the milk tea and took a large gulp.

Instantly, I felt a wonderful sensation as if my Eight Characters were returning to my body.

I opened the lid, intending to finish the whole thing in one breath.

Just then, a hand suddenly grabbed my arm.

“Don’t drink that!”

I looked back to see an Old Daoist.

“That is a Water Ghost’s Cadaver Belly Water. If you drink it, you’ll die.”

I looked at the milk tea again.

It had turned into a cup of dark green, foul-smelling water.

Inside, there were wriggling mosquito larvae and rotting aquatic weeds.

I screamed and threw it aside.

I couldn’t stop retching.

“What exactly is going on?”

The Old Daoist said that every Water Ghost can only find a Substitute in the specific body of water where they died.

If that body of water dries up, they can only use Cadaver Belly Water as a replacement.

“It seems you’ve been targeted by a Water Ghost.”

My head felt like it was about to explode in an instant.

But how could a Water Ghost dare to harm someone right at the entrance of a Meng Po Temple?

The Old Daoist said, “This temple hasn’t had offerings for years.”

“It was long ago occupied by evil spirits. You thought you were honoring a deity, but you were actually worshipping ghosts.”

“Aren’t you just delivering yourself to your death?”

I collapsed onto the ground all at once.

It seemed I really couldn’t trust the words of ghosts.

I hurriedly begged the Old Daoist to save me.

However, after the Old Daoist stared at the top of my head for a moment, his expression shifted drastically.

“Child, a green light is emanating from your Skull Crown. Someone has stolen your Eight Characters.”

I broke down completely in an instant.

So Wanting was also trying to harm me; it turned out that even the words of humans couldn’t be trusted.

The Old Daoist stroked his beard and said that to be targeted by both humans and ghosts at once, my Eight Characters must be very peculiar.

“Quickly, let me see them.”

I quickly recited my Eight Characters.

The Old Daoist counted on his fingers to calculate, but suddenly his brow furrowed.

“Child, you don’t trust me?”

I quickly explained that I had no one left to trust but him.

“The person with these Eight Characters has been dead for at least ten years.”

It seemed this Old Daoist was truly capable.

The Eight Characters I had given him were actually my grandfather’s.

I really couldn’t afford to trust any person blindly anymore.

So I apologized to him immediately.

The Old Daoist was able to understand my state of mind.

After he finished calculating my actual Eight Characters, he let out a long sigh.

“So that’s how it is.”
