Chapter 2

I returned to the dormitory that evening.

Xiao Yu had bought herself a new phone and a new computer, and she even bought the Chanel bag I had my eye on.

What infuriated me the most was that she bought the latest Prada lipsticks for both Wanting and Shanshan.

All of this should have been mine. Even the favor and the grateful atmosphere should have belonged to me.

But now, I had nothing at all.

To make matters even more irritating, Xiao Yu had rented a luxury apartment off-campus.

Before she left, she threw a parting shot at me.

She said that living in a dorm with someone as greedy as me would negatively affect her financial luck.

I was so angry that I lay in bed trembling under my covers.

I even began to suspect that the three of them were teaming up to mess with me.

The more I thought about it, the more agonizing it became.

I stayed in that state until the middle of the night.

In my daze, I heard the voices of those two ghosts speaking again.

The little girl said, “They’re all asleep again. How boring.”

The middle-aged woman let out a sigh. “I originally wanted to give her another chance to strike it rich, but it seems there is no destiny between us after all.”

My heart gave a sudden jolt.

I wanted to sit straight up and accept this stroke of fate.

But then I thought better of it; the two of them were ghosts.

I couldn’t let it go to my head and take a reckless risk.

Just then, the little girl spoke again.

“There are ten gold bars buried under the third pillar of the Octagonal Pavilion in the Lake. Back when they were digging the lake, they were just one shovel-stroke away from finding them. What a pity.”

“Shh! Heavenly secrets are only for those destined to hear them. If you keep talking nonsense, we will be punished. I really shouldn’t have brought you here. Let’s go.”

After they finished speaking, everything went silent again.

I quietly peeked over to the side.

The two ghosts had vanished.

I was secretly delighted. Ten gold bars would be worth at least several million.

Who says I don’t have an Unexpected Wealth Fate?

What is meant to be mine will always be mine.

I immediately got out of bed.

I prepared to head to the pavilion in the middle of the lake to fish out the gold overnight.

To my surprise, as soon as I finished getting dressed, I found Wanting blocking the doorway.

“Those Water Ghosts won’t let you off that easily. They must have set an even bigger bait for you this time.”

I felt a shiver run through me. How did she know those two ghosts had come back?

However, I didn’t want to miss out on this opportunity again.

So, I claimed that I was going for a night run to relieve some stress.

I insisted that I hadn’t seen those two ghosts at all.

Unexpectedly, Wanting grabbed hold of me.

“Haven’t you thought about why you’re the only one out of the four people in this dorm who can hear them? Isn’t it obvious they are coming for you? Besides, a ‘Ghost Bringing Wealth’ scenario usually only offers one chance at fortune. Why would they sit by the window every day specifically to talk to you, with the offers getting bigger every time? Isn’t it just because they’re afraid you won’t take the bait?”

As she spoke, she pulled out her phone, which displayed a news report.

Three years ago, a woman and a little girl had accidentally fallen into the school lake and drowned.

I looked at the two photos; they did indeed look a bit like the silhouettes of the two people I had seen.

I panicked instantly.

But why were these two ghosts fixated on me?

Just as Wanting was about to speak, her gaze suddenly darted toward the window.

“They haven’t left yet. If I reveal their secret, we will all die.”

My legs went weak, and I nearly collapsed to the floor.

But this immense wealth was right before my eyes. If I didn’t take it, it would be a true waste.

So, I suggested that Wanting go get the gold bars, and we could split them equally afterward.

Her family had a tradition of studying Taoism, so she must have a way to resolve the situation.

To my surprise, Wanting refused flatly.

“There can’t be any gold bars there. Anyone who goes will die.”

I broke out in a cold sweat again.

But when I returned to the dormitory that night…

I realized that something else had happened.
