Chapter 1
Chapter 1
On my first day in the big city, I crashed into a car.
The logo on the car was a horse, and my little electric scooter had knocked it crooked.
I scratched my head and stood there honestly. I was a little frustrated, but if I had done something wrong, I had to own up to it. Ever since I was a kid, I had been the kind of man who stood straight and sat upright.
Someone got out of the car. Judging by his face, he was even younger than me, but his clothes were expensive, and there was an icy, dangerous air about him.
He took off his sunglasses and narrowed his eyes, looking me up and down.
I carefully looked back at him. His skin was fair, fairer than the prettiest girl in our village, yet he was taller than the strongest man back home.
Looking at him, I suddenly thought of the jade-faced Bodhisattva statue in my grandma’s room.
The same exquisitely painted brows and eyes.
He stared at me coldly for a few moments. Then his gaze abruptly turned scorching and sharp, as if it could pierce straight through my delivery uniform.
“Get in.”
Uneasy, I got into the car. The ordinary-looking man in the passenger seat turned around and began asking me questions one by one.
“Name?”
“Chen Xiaoniu.”
The man beside me let out a soft snort of laughter.
I was annoyed, but I didn’t dare say anything. After all, I had hit his car.
“Age?”
“Twenty-nine.”
“Do you have a partner?”
My face went red. “No. I’ve been single this whole time.”
Because of my grandma’s illness, our family savings had all been spent. I knew I was poor, and I didn’t want to drag a girl down with me, so even when matchmakers came around, I turned them down.
This year, I had planned to come to the big city and earn some money to get married.
Who knew I would get off to such a bad start?
The man beside me shifted slightly, and the man in the passenger seat immediately fell silent.
He glanced at me with a faint, unreadable smile and asked, “Single this whole time, so you’ve never touched anyone else?”
I nodded blankly.
It was only much later that I realized why, back then, he had said “anyone else” instead of “a woman.”
After the man in the passenger seat finished interrogating me like he was checking my household registration, that was it. He didn’t even ask whether I had money to pay for the damage.
The handsome man beside me slowly extended a hand. “I am Ying Xuhui, executive president of Hengchuang Group. It’s a pleasure to meet you. I hope we’ll get along well from now on.”
“What?” I was dumbfounded.
“Be my secretary. Monthly salary of twenty thousand, full social insurance and housing fund. Interested?”
Excitement surged through me. I knew I had met a benefactor.
I grabbed his hand in both of mine and shook it hard. “I’m in!”
