Chapter 5
Chapter 5
“I’m sorry, Shen Tinglan and I are schoolmates. We got carried away chatting, had a few too many drinks, and got drunk. It’s all a misunderstanding, really.”
Lu Yanchu was starting to panic too. He kept a calm facade, but his voice was actually trembling.
The bodyguard fetched the restaurant’s surveillance footage and made a copy of it in front of both of them.
My head was spinning.
So dizzy I felt as light as a feather.
When I opened my eyes again, I was being carried by Pei Lu. He looked exhausted, with dark circles under his eyes, as if he had stayed up all night.
“Hubby…” My voice trembled a little.
“The wine glasses have been sent for testing,” he said in a low voice. “They will go to jail.”
I stared at him blankly, a sudden tremor running through my heart.
When Pei Lu gets ruthless, he’s terrifyingly cold.
It was the first time I’d seen him show this much emotion.
The always gentle and refined Pei Lu yanked off his tie.
This was a first for Pei Lu, like he had torn off his refined mask to reveal a dark side.
“Pei Lu…?”
Was this really my gentle, restrained, and steady husband?
I murmured softly.
I don’t know how that sentence hit a sore spot, but in the end, I cried.
Sleepless all night, I was almost completely drained.
No way…
Is he crazy?
Could it be that he heard about Jiang Sizhu and got some kind of thrill?
I was right.
Jiang Sizhu had been transferred to the head office.
“Sister Lan, word from the coast is that Jiang Sizhu and Chen Song broke up a month ago!
“President Pei will be spending a long time at headquarters lately. He won’t leave until the project is done. They’ll run into each other all the time-what if they meet?”
My little assistant had worked for Pei Lu for years before being transferred to me after our marriage to become my personal assistant.
She knew about Pei Lu pursuing Jiang Sizhu back in college, so Jiang Sizhu’s reappearance made her feel more threatened and anxious than I did.
Having been with me for a few years, if I divorced Pei Lu, her position would become very awkward.
I kept painting, not overly bothered. There was no point in caring; I couldn’t keep them from seeing each other at all.
“The devastating power of a first love… Sister Lan, don’t you get it?”
My assistant sighed.
My hand trembled, and the brushstroke went crooked. It wasn’t obvious, but you could still see an awkward stroke on the painting.
“Even without Pei Lu, I can still afford to keep you,” I said, trying to reassure her.
But she looked even more defeated after hearing that, as if convinced that the return of Jiang Sizhu, that first love, would deal a huge blow to my marriage.
This poor girl, I told her I could support her, and she didn’t even believe it.
…
My assistant had recently been hinting at me to go back to the office.
I was originally very busy.
But I still found time to go to headquarters.
When I arrived, I passed by the admin building and saw a group of people from a distance waiting by the elevators.
In the middle stood a man.
I hadn’t paid attention until that tall, cold figure slowly turned around.
It was Pei Lu.
He was wearing a light gray suit, impeccably tailored, with an indifferent expression. His fingers lightly tapped on his phone screen, and he looked like he had stepped out of a magazine-calm, cold, and unapproachable.
I rarely saw this side of Pei Lu.
“Sister Lan.” My assistant gently tugged my sleeve and pointed with her chin toward a woman hiding stealthily behind a pillar. “Look over there, isn’t that Jiang Sizhu?
