Chapter 4
“What? A Little Ghost?”
I frowned, staring at Jiang Xiaoyu.
When it came to “raising Little Ghosts,” I was actually quite familiar with the practice.
It used to be prevalent in Southeast Asia before spreading into the country.
Because it was so sinister, the Supernatural Affairs Bureau had previously teamed up with various levels of government agencies for a massive crackdown.
It was during that period that an unusual number of celebrities in the entertainment industry got into trouble, sparking endless rumors among netizens.
Afterward, we covered everything up using a variety of creative excuses.
Jiang Xiaoyu must have started raising hers after that wave passed.
I watched her for a moment, then asked in confusion, “How come I can’t sense the aura of a Little Ghost on her?”
Greed Maiden admired her bright red nails, her face practically screaming the words: “Beg me.”
Is it really okay for you to be this tsundere? Think of the bigger picture, for heaven’s sake!
Just as I was about to ask for more details, the main door swung open with a bang.
Simultaneously, a shrill female voice rang out:
“I was wondering why our family business has been running into so much trouble lately.
“Turns out you’ve hooked up with this jinx again!”
Everyone turned toward the sound.
Bai Chen’s mother stormed in, heading straight for Jiang Xiaoyu. She raised her hand and delivered a sharp slap to her face.
“I told you before, the Bai Family only recognizes Ren Jingjing as our daughter-in-law!
“If you try to seduce my son again, don’t even think about keeping your job in this industry!”
Having said that, she turned to Bai Chen. Her face showed no warmth, remaining icy cold.
“If you insist on being with her, remember that the Bai Family has more than one son.
“I can revoke your inheritance at any time.”
I lowered my eyes, trying my best to minimize my presence.
Unfortunately, Bai Chen’s mother locked onto my position instantly. Like a performer in a Sichuan opera, her face transformed in a heartbeat, taking on a delighted expression as she grabbed my hand and began fussing over me.
I was forced to play along, my face a mask of awkwardness.
On the other side, Jiang Xiaoyu clutched her face in disbelief, her eyes turning red instantly.
She turned to Bai Chen with a look of pure grievance, seemingly seeking comfort.
Who would have thought that Bai Chen, who had been all lovey-dovey with her just moments ago, wouldn’t even spare her a glance now? Instead, he walked over to my side.
“Mom, what are you thinking?
“There’s nothing between me and her.
“I came here today to visit Jingjing on set. This woman insisted on rushing over and acting all familiar with me.”
Jiang Xiaoyu could hardly believe her ears. Her expression was one of indescribable resentment and jealousy.
I sighed inwardly.
Only Bai Chen himself knew how much of his “Best Actor” title was actually deserved.
If the Bai Family hadn’t poured money into promoting him, his acting skills would be so bad that he’d be rejected from an adult film for sounding too fake.
Consequently, Bai Chen was actually terrified of his parents.
Otherwise, he wouldn’t have broken up with Jiang Xiaoyu so quickly over a single word from them, only to obediently stay with me.
Not to mention the massive Bai Family fortune was a huge draw for him.
As for why Bai Chen’s parents held me in such high regard, it was only because of my supposedly auspicious birth chart, which they believed would take the Bai Family to the next level.
Put this whole family together and you’d find eight hundred hidden agendas with room to spare, yet you couldn’t scrape together even 0.1% of genuine familial affection.
At this moment, Bai Chen was trying to salvage his image.
He walked to my side, feigning affection, and tried to take my hand.
I dodged him effortlessly.
You’ve got to be kidding me! Even Greed Maiden doesn’t like him anymore; why should I keep playing the role of the “loyal lapdog who won’t leave”?
Bai Chen froze for a second, then gave me a threatening glare, as if telling me not to be ungrateful.
I curled my lips into a smile.
“So sorry, but I’ve suddenly lost all interest in you.
“It’s a hard pass from me.”
