Chapter 1
Chapter 1
On my first day on set, the Best Actor, Bai Chen, came to visit, drawing a crowd of shouting, gawking onlookers.
My manager, Sister Wang, poked her head in and called out to me:
“Ren Jingjing, your boyfriend is here to see you.”
I gave a sluggish “Oh” in response, my heart completely unmoved.
I didn’t know who my boyfriend was actually here to see, but it certainly wasn’t me.
I hadn’t intended to go out, but a female voice that only I could hear was screaming frantically in my ear:
“Go out! Now!
“I want to see Chenchen!
“Otherwise, I’m going to throw a tantrum!”
With a look of pure misery, I touched the Jadeite Earring on my earlobe and couldn’t help but grumble inwardly:
Who did I offend to deserve this?!
In truth, both entering the entertainment industry and getting close to the Best Actor, Bai Chen, were things I’d been forced to do.
Five years ago, I didn’t even know a single celebrity.
Because I was constantly out on missions, I had no time to pay attention to the entertainment world.
Who could have known that during my final mission-arresting a Flood Dragon King who was on the verge of transforming into a true dragon-an accident would happen?
Hidden within the Flood Dragon King’s lair was a Companion Greed Maiden who had lived for thousands of years.
She took advantage of my lapse in concentration and possessed me.
The entire department was helpless against her. After all, she was such an ancient entity that there wasn’t even a record of her in the archives of the Supernatural Affairs Bureau.
All we knew was that a Greed Maiden was insatiable by nature; she would steal the wealth, fate, and luck of everyone around her.
To kill her, one would first have to kill the poor little soul she was possessing.
In just the few short hours after I returned to headquarters:
The Bureau Chief’s secret stash of money, hidden in his thermal leggings, was discovered by his wife, and he was ordered to write a hundred-thousand-word self-reflection.
Captain Wang’s newly purchased school-district apartment saw its price instantly slashed in half.
Xiao Meng, who was still in his probationary period, accidentally yanked off the Bureau Chief’s toupee, earning himself a “C-” evaluation and a three-year extension on his probation.
In stark contrast to all that was my own heaven-defying good luck.
My bank account balance shot up faster than my blood pressure.
When I went out to buy a cup of coffee, I came back with a five-carat diamond ring stuck in the tread of my shoe.
In short: the unluckier others became, the luckier I got.
Everyone fled in all directions, howling in dismay.
The Bureau Chief patted my shoulder with a heavy, meaningful gaze.
“The situation is what it is. How about you… sacrifice yourself for the country?”
I immediately ordered ten toupees and sent them to the Bureau Chief, my eyes brimming with hot tears.
“But I’m a living human being too!”
Finally, we found the raw jadeite stone that the Greed Maiden had originally been bound to.
Following instructions from ancient texts, we temporarily sealed and suppressed her within it, crafting it into a Jadeite Earring for me to wear at all times.
Only then did the chaotic situation stabilize slightly, preventing everyone from losing their fortunes, their looks, or their virginity.
But the Greed Maiden still wouldn’t settle down; she delighted in causing all sorts of minor accidents.
Eventually, everyone reached their breaking point and forced me into an early, paid retirement.
Who would have thought that before I even had a chance to enjoy my retirement, the Greed Maiden would see Bai Chen on TV?
As it turns out, this creature wasn’t just greedy for money-she was freaking boy-crazy too!
She nagged in my ear day and night:
“I want to see Chenchen up close! Hurry up and get into the entertainment industry!”
In the end, right before she nagged me into a nervous breakdown, I finally resigned myself to fate and gave in.
