Chapter 2

Sure enough, by the time I finally made my late entrance, Bai Chen was already deep in conversation with the female lead of this production, Jiang Xiaoyu.

At one point, the conversation must have taken a lively turn, because Jiang Xiaoyu even performed a bit of a spicy dance she’d just learned for him.

Since it was the first day of filming, a camera was set up nearby for a livestream to drum up hype. The netizens were already shipping the two of them like crazy:

[Ahhh! The ‘Chen-Yu Luoyan’ ship is so real!]

[A match made in heaven! Power couple points!]

[Uh, guys, isn’t Ren Jingjing actually the Best Actor’s official girlfriend?]

[Pfft, he’s not married and she’s not a wife. Besides, in what world is Ren Jingjing even worthy of Bai Chen?]

The people on set looked a bit awkward when they saw me arrive. Only the two leads acted as if I didn’t exist, not toning down their behavior in the slightest.

Fortunately, I didn’t really care. I had no interest in a scumbag who kept two feet in different boats.

Under the Greed Maiden’s nagging, and sporting a face that looked like I was there to collect a debt, I grabbed a chair. I dragged it-*clatter-clatter*-right between Bai Chen and Jiang Xiaoyu and plopped down.

The disdain in the corners of Bai Chen’s eyes and the curve of his brows was practically overflowing. Jiang Xiaoyu also shot me a look of pure contempt.

I gave a grand wave of my hand.

“Don’t worry, I’m not here to break you up.

“I’m here to join you!

“Don’t stop the music, don’t stop the dance.”

The live comments went silent for a split second before the screen exploded:

[Hahaha, Ren Jingjing has some serious social confidence!]

[I don’t like Ren Jingjing at all. She’s obsessed with the Best Actor but tries to act all ‘Zen’ and detached.]

[Exactly. If she’s so detached, why is she even in the entertainment industry?]

Most of the comments were being steered by Jiang Xiaoyu’s fans. It was understandable, really; after all, Jiang Xiaoyu was Bai Chen’s first love.

However, because Bai Chen’s parents were superstitious, they had their fortunes read. The fortune teller claimed Jiang Xiaoyu would bring misfortune to her husband, so the parents forced the two apart.

Later, at an event, they took a liking to me as I followed closely behind Bai Chen. Bai Chen’s parents said I had a ‘blessed face’ that would bring prosperity to my husband.

Bai Chen couldn’t win against his parents, so he ended up with me. To him, I was just one more ‘simp’ with an official title.

After all, ever since I entered the industry, I had been trailing after him. Whatever movie he filmed, I would go to that set to audition. Even if I only played an extra, I had to be in the cast.

Everyone thought I was hopelessly in love with him. In reality, I was just being nagged into a state of living death by the Greed Maiden and had no choice but to compromise.

Jiang Xiaoyu hated me for it. Because I was famous in the industry for being ‘Zen’-as long as I could be near Bai Chen, I didn’t care about anything else-she had targeted me more than once in public with passive-aggressive remarks.

“If I, Jiang Xiaoyu, want something, I’ll fight for it and win it fair and square,” she’d say.

“Unlike some people, who act all pure while being anything but.”

Her fans also threw mud at me online, giving me all sorts of nicknames like ‘Fake Buddhist Socialite’ or ‘Jingjing the Schizo-Bitch.’ They even claimed I used underhanded methods to threaten and force Bai Chen into being my boyfriend.

Regarding this, I had once asked Bai Chen, “Aren’t you going to clear things up for me? After all, your parents are the ones who made us get together.”

Bai Chen had replied with total indifference, “I can’t be bothered. The hype will die down in a few days. Besides, didn’t you chase me for years first? Can’t you handle this little bit of grievance?”
