Chapter 6
Chapter 6
The other villagers snapped back to their senses and split into two groups. A few of them grabbed weapons and charged toward me.
Lu Lingzhu and I were in the stilt houses facing each other, separated only by a stone path. We had not noticed it from downstairs, but when those villagers rushed into the middle of the road, they suddenly stopped in unison and looked up at the sky.
A middle-aged man reached out his hand and murmured softly.
“It’s raining…”
Then he raised his voice, his face filled with terror.
“It’s raining! Run!”
The rest of the villagers started shrieking too. One after another, they put away the weapons in their hands and bolted outside at top speed. In just a short while, dozens of people had scattered without a trace, and there was even a lone shoe left behind on the ground.
Jiang Haoyan and I were both dumbfounded.
“Is rain really that scary?”
Raindrops came pelting down in a dense curtain, splashing countless motes of dust up from the ground. The temperature seemed to drop several degrees all at once.
A gloomy gust of wind swept past. I shivered, wrapped my outdoor jacket tighter around myself, and walked over toward Lu Lingzhu.
“What was that just now? Why did you suddenly start dancing around like you were possessed?”
Lu Lingzhu sighed, then crouched down with me to pick up the things that had fallen out of the backpack.
“Don’t even mention it. This claw is seriously weird.”
It turned out that just now, while Lu Lingzhu and Song Feifei were hiding behind the woodpile, she had suddenly felt a sharp pain on the back of her hand. When she looked down, she saw that the lizard claw had gone berserk for some reason and had scratched several bloody marks across her hand.
Lu Lingzhu gnashed her teeth.
“You dare scratch me? I’ll show you what happens.”
Once she said that, her temper flared. Without caring about anything else, she pinched that slender claw between two fingers, tightening her thumb and forefinger with all her strength, trying to crush it.
Who would have thought that when she squeezed, her two fingers nearly touched, yet the lizard claw was like soft candy. Its flesh sank in, then sprang back out to either side, completely unharmed. It even took advantage of the moment to rake another vicious scratch across her arm.
A stab of pain shot through her, and Lu Lingzhu completely lost it.
“Damn it, get out here!”
She threw caution to the wind, grabbed that lizard arm, and yanked outward with all her might.
“It felt like a nerve was being pulled straight out of my arm, all the way up into my head.”
Still shaken, Lu Lingzhu sucked in a cold breath.
“That pain was like having my muscles torn loose and my skin peeled off. Hiss…”
I hurried to comfort her.
“You idiot!”
