Chapter 4

Song Feifei lunged forward and slapped at the car window.

“Song Tianming, how many days have you been sitting in there? Why didn’t you call home?”

Behind the glass, that face was still pressed tightly against the window.

His complexion was an unnatural, deathly white. Even his lips had no color. His expression was stiff, and his eyes barely moved, making him look like a pure white plaster mask.

Lu Lingzhu ran over to open the door, but when she pulled the handle, it wouldn’t budge. The door had been locked from the inside. Lu Lingzhu picked up a rock from the roadside and smashed the window open, and the four of us climbed in one after another.

The moment I jumped into the car, I knew something was wrong.

The floor beneath my feet was horribly sticky, like I’d stepped into wet cement. Every step took a huge effort just to pull my shoes free.

I shone my flashlight down at the floor and immediately sucked in a cold breath.

The entire floor of the car was coated in a thick layer of reddish-brown slime. It looked just like congealed blood. I crouched down, dabbed a bit of it with my fingertip, and brought it close to my nose.

It was fishy and foul, with an incredibly strong smell of wood. It didn’t smell like blood. If anything, it smelled more like the sap of some plant.

I asked Hua Yuling if she knew what it was. She studied it for a while, then frowned and shook her head.

“The smell is kind of familiar, but I can’t remember what it is right now.”

The two of us were staring at the slime on my fingertip, studying it, when Hua Yuling pulled my hand closer to her face and tentatively tried to lick it.

This was basically a habit of hers.

As the Gu Clan Saintess, she had the Golden Cicada Gu inside her body and was immune to all poisons. She had grown up eating every disgusting bug imaginable, so the girl didn’t care about filth and wasn’t afraid of dying. Whenever she came across something unknown, her first instinct was to taste it.

Unexpectedly, before Hua Yuling could get close, a head suddenly popped out from the side and bit my entire finger into its mouth.

I screamed, “Ah! Lu Lingzhu, what are you doing?!”

After sucking my finger clean, Lu Lingzhu lifted her head smugly.

“What good stuff are you two eating behind my back?

“Did you bring chocolate or something?”

Then she even smacked her lips, savoring the taste in her mouth.

That heavy woody scent was stimulated by her saliva, and the fragrance abruptly changed. It was as if the wood had rapidly withered and rotted, dragging along the snakes, insects, rats, and ants beneath it, their corpses festering and oozing pus, giving off an overwhelmingly powerful stench of dead rat.

Lu Lingzhu: “Blech-”

Hua Yuling let out an “ah” and turned to look at Lu Lingzhu. An extremely complicated expression crossed her face-sympathy, disgust, and even the faintest trace of envy.

“I know what this is now.”
