Chapter 6
Chapter 6
After I finished speaking, the entire tent fell silent. Everyone looked at one another, their faces full of shock and confusion. Clearly, not a single person believed me.
Jiang Qingsong let out an angry roar and smashed the wine glass in his hand.
“Don’t listen to her!”
As he spoke, he rolled up his sleeves and strode toward me.
“You filthy bitch. Got used up by old men in the big city, did you? And now you come here acting all pure and noble!”
Several groomsmen chimed in, forming a circle around me.
“Exactly. Can’t take a joke?”
“You even hit someone. If we don’t teach you a lesson, you bitch, you’ll think we’re easy to bully.”
“Strip this slut’s dress off and make her kneel on the ground to apologize to Brother Bin.”
The other two bridesmaids were so scared they had started crying. Jiang Ping was also desperately trying to squeeze through the crowd toward us.
“What is going on? Qiao Moyu, how did it turn into this-”
Some of Jiang Ping’s relatives sensed that things were getting out of hand and tried to come over to stop them, but Jiang Qingsong’s family blocked them below the stage.
“They’re just young girls. Don’t do this. You’ll scare them half to death.”
“What young girls? The way I see it, they’ve got plenty of experience. The moment she opens her mouth, it’s ghosts this and death that. She ruined our Qingsong’s wedding. If we don’t teach her a lesson, she’ll think our family is easy to push around!”
Jiang Qingsong’s older male cousin stood at the very front, filled with righteous indignation. “That’s right. I’ve long thought these bridesmaids were no good. Strip all their clothes off and see if they still dare spout nonsense!”
“Yeah, stuff their stinking mouths with socks!”
As they spoke, someone actually took off the socks on his feet and threw them onto the stage.
“Qingsong, use my socks to wipe her mouth. Drive away the bad luck.”
Jiang Ping was so anxious she was on the verge of tears.
“Jiang Qingsong, stop! None of you are allowed to mess around!”
I was surrounded by a crowd of men at the very center. Through the gaps between them, I calmly waved at Hua Yuling.
“Huahua, you and Jiang Yan take the Jiang family and leave first. You must do exactly as I said.”
The sky was growing darker and darker. Chilly winds gusted through, knocking several empty bowls and wine glasses off the tables. They clattered noisily across the ground.
Hua Yuling let out a cold snort.
“You know I’ve been in a bad mood lately, right?”
I was at a loss. “What happened?”
Hua Yuling said, “Don’t let the ghosts bite all these people to death. Leave the groom to me.”
With that, she spat at Jiang Qingsong.
“Pah. What kind of low-grade garbage gets to be a groom?”
“You-”
Jiang Qingsong tried to strike again, but Hua Yuling was already quick to react. She grabbed Jiang Yan by the arm, jumped down from the stage, and called out to the relatives.
“Thunder! Rain! Hurry home and bring in your laundry!”
Half coaxing and half urging, Hua Yuling also summoned a swarm of snakes, insects, rats, and ants to scurry wildly across the ground, driving away more than half the people who had stayed to watch the show.
Jiang Yan dragged away the Jiang family’s relatives as well. In no time, only the men who had stayed behind with ill intentions and us bridesmaids remained inside the tent.
The men were obviously looking forward to what came next. One by one, the corners of their mouths curled up uncontrollably, no matter how hard they tried to suppress their grins.
Jiang Qingsong rubbed his wrist, then stroked his chin as his eyes swept over me from head to toe.
“Qiao Moyu?”
“You should be grateful you’re good-looking. I’ll spare your life.”
I also looked him up and down, then sighed regretfully.
“Unfortunately, you aren’t so lucky. With a face like yours, I can’t save you.”
Jiang Qingsong snapped, “Fuck, you bitch, you’ve really got a stubborn mouth!”
Raspy Voice said, “Exactly. Even now, you’re still pretending to be some ghost-hunting mystic. Saving us? Heh. Where are the ghosts, huh? Where?”
I raised my hand and pointed below the stage.
“Right behind you.”
All the groomsmen were on the stage. Below the stage stood dozens of men, all Jiang Qingsong’s friends and relatives. Every last one of them had their attention fixed on the stage, heads tilted up as they stared this way.
At my words, the crowd burst into laughter.
Jiang Qingsong turned his head back with a smile.
“Trying that trick? Fine, I’ll look. So? Where are they?”
His smile froze on his face. His eyes suddenly bulged wide, his eyeballs nearly popping out of their sockets.
