Chapter 6

To leave the hospital sooner and recover faster, I was very cooperative with the doctor’s treatment.

The medicine was bitter, but I stopped secretly pouring it away.

During this time, I was also very lethargic. Sometimes I would sleep for an entire day and night, only to be eventually woken up by Shen Xiao.

Waking up with my days and nights flipped left me with a strange sense of emptiness that made me irritable, so I never gave him a kind look.

Shen Xiao would only remind me to take my medicine and sleep, yet he wouldn’t let me sleep for too long.

I suppose he’s been in the position of a powerful CEO for too long; he’s becoming more and more overbearing and unreasonable.

“President Shen, have I spoiled you? You’re getting more and more out of line.”

Shen Xiao merely lowered his eyes in silence, his gaze unreadable.

In the past, I could always provoke him.

Shen Xiao couldn’t win an argument against me, and he couldn’t lay a hand on me. In the end, he would be left speechless, face flushed with anger, before storming off.

I don’t know what he’s been through, but now, no matter how wild I act, I can’t seem to stir even a ripple of emotion in him.

The doctor said I was recovering well.

Finally, it was time to be discharged. I thought Shen Xiao still wouldn’t let me go.

However, on the day of my discharge, Shen Xiao was nowhere to be seen. The one who came to pick me up was his assistant, Song He.

Song He helped me move my things into the car, constantly stealing glances at me as if he had something on the tip of his tongue.

I saw through it but chose not to speak.

When we were almost at my front door, Song He finally couldn’t hold it in any longer. “Miss Xu, could you go see President Shen? He…”

“No.”

He hadn’t expected me to refuse so quickly.

Since I cut him off before he could finish, Song He felt more and more aggrieved. He muttered petulantly, “I’ve never seen anyone as heartless as you.”

In the end, regardless of whether I was willing or not, he swerved the car around and drove me to the entrance of Shen Xiao’s home.

I found it both infuriating and hilarious. It seemed the ‘CEO disease’ was contagious.

Song He followed Shen Xiao every day, and his style of doing things when angry was starting to look a bit like his boss’s.

Shen Xiao’s home used facial recognition, so I was able to enter quickly.

It was a spacious, high-end apartment with a minimalist decor-cold and desolate, as if no one lived there.

Suddenly, the sound of a water glass shattering came from the bedroom.

I walked in and saw Shen Xiao wearing thin white pajamas, rubbing his face in a state of exhaustion.

Hearing the noise, he looked up alertly. “Who is it?”

Seeing it was me, a flash of astonishment crossed his eyes. “Why are you here?”

As soon as he spoke, he seemed to realize something and hurriedly covered his face. “Don’t look.”

Shen Xiao’s face was covered in red spots that hadn’t yet faded.

“Have you been drinking?”

Shen Xiao was allergic to alcohol. If he drank too much, he would run a fever and break out in hives all over his body.

“Yeah, a little.”

I didn’t press him further about why he was drinking. I went to the kitchen, poured a fresh glass of water, and handed it to him. Mimicking the tone he used to use with me, I commanded, “Take your medicine.”

After taking the allergy medication, he drifted off to sleep again. When I tried to take his temperature, he suddenly grabbed my hand.

I tried to pull away, but he held on even tighter. “Don’t leave, okay?”

“Let go.”

I called his name a few times, but he didn’t respond.

Shen Xiao’s grip was too tight for me to break free. Finally, I had to compromise. “Fine, fine, fine. Let go first. I won’t leave. My hand hurts.”

He actually listened to that sentence and obediently let go.

To be able to pick and choose what he wanted to hear even while asleep-I couldn’t tell if he was delirious from the fever or just faking it.
