Chapter 3

But we had only been married for a short while.

I never imagined he would have a change of heart so quickly.

To be with another woman openly and legally, he had used every method possible to pressure me into a divorce.

“Betrayers go to hell.”

Duan Yi rolled the words around in his mouth, savoring them before shaking his head with a soft laugh. “You actually believe that nonsense they tell children? Stop trapping yourself in the past and torturing yourself.”

Duan Yi tried to pull me up, but I used every ounce of my strength to shove him away.

Just then, Hu Fei walked over, her red high heels clicking on the floor.

The moment she spoke, her voice carried a sob. “Sister Xu Chi, I’m sorry. I didn’t want it to be like this, but I just couldn’t control my feelings. Please, hit me, scream at me… maybe it’ll make you feel better.”

Hu Fei was my colleague. She was a recent graduate-young and beautiful-but because of her timid personality, she was constantly teased by the men at the office.

I had helped her several times, and she always liked to follow me around.

I never expected that beneath that weak, pitiful facade lay such a calculating mind.

She had only gotten close to me to seduce my husband.

Fury surged through me, and I desperately wanted to slap her.

But before my raised hand could fall, Duan Yi caught my wrist.

“This isn’t her fault. I don’t have feelings for you anymore. You refuse to divorce me, yet you won’t even let me have someone obedient by my side.”

“Fine. Then let’s divorce.”

Duan Yi’s expression shifted slightly. He seemed unable to believe that I was letting him go so easily this time.

“Name your conditions. I’ll do my best to compensate you, but stop bothering us.”

Duan Yi shielded the terrified Hu Fei behind his back.

I slapped him across the face, but it wasn’t enough to vent my rage. I threw the smashed cake at him and pummeled his chest with my fists.

Duan Yi stood there motionless, letting me vent.

My head began to throb again.

Two years ago, my stepsister tricked me into getting into an illegal taxi, and I went missing for twelve hours.

To save me, Duan Yi had been beaten so severely that he nearly never woke up.

I had also suffered a major head injury, losing the memory of that traumatic ordeal and leaving me with severe aftereffects.

When the pain flared up, it felt like a stake being driven through my skull.

The doctor said that if my condition continued to deteriorate, the consequences would be dire.

“What’s wrong? Is it happening again?”

Seeing Duan Yi’s nervous expression, a ridiculous thought crossed my mind.

If I actually died from the pain, would he regret being so cruel and heartless to me?

When I got home, I threw out everything that belonged to him.

I called Li Qing and asked her to help me draft a divorce agreement.

Li Qing was my best friend and a renowned lawyer who specialized in matrimonial disputes.

She knew everything that had happened between Duan Yi and me.

On the other end of the line, Li Qing’s voice paused. “Are you sure?”

By the time Li Qing arrived, I was calmly cutting our photos into pieces, one by one.

Only one remained: a photo of Duan Yi and me making a wish at a temple.

For some reason, I couldn’t bring myself to cut it.

As I stared blankly at it, Li Qing took the scissors from my hand and tucked the final photo away.

She hesitated. “Maybe Duan Yi has his reasons. If he regrets this, would you ever forgive him?”

“No.”

Seeing my firm resolve, Li Qing finally breathed a sigh of relief. “Xu Chi, you’ve finally come to your senses. That’s wonderful.”

Yet, her expression remained sorrowful. “Xu Chi, look forward. Things will get better.”
