Chapter 5
Chapter 5
The night surged into the room like a predatory beast.
In the middle of the night, I woke up drenched in a cold sweat from the sheer intensity of the pain.
I had fallen into a nightmare again. Fragments of a forgotten memory were crashing through my mind-shattered, chaotic, and desperate.
I couldn’t see anything clearly; I couldn’t hear a thing.
Fear coiled around me like a venomous snake, tightening its grip until the pain made it hard to breathe.
Finally, I caught the faint, muffled sounds of Li Qing and Shen Xiao arguing.
“Are you out of your mind? Do you even know what you’re doing? You’re going to kill her.”
…
I was taken to the hospital.
When I woke up, I saw Shen Xiao keeping watch by my bedside. His face bore the exhaustion of a sleepless night, his long lashes cast a grayish shadow over his lower eyelids.
He pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to force himself awake, and asked, “Are you feeling any better?”
The air was thick with the scent of disinfectant, making me sneeze several times in a row.
In truth, I should have guessed it long ago-Shen Xiao had been monitoring me. Ever since I married Duan Yi, Shen Xiao seemed to be everywhere I went.
Sometimes he’d be working in a café, sometimes he’d be talking to his assistant on the street, and sometimes he’d just be sitting in his car, watching me from a distance.
He always seemed to be following me, keeping his distance but never truly leaving.
Yet every time we met, he would do nothing but tirelessly remind me to take my medicine.
It was like a constant reminder that I was sick.
It was honestly so annoying!
Shen Xiao ignored my irritation and held the water and pills out to me again. “Be good. Take your medicine.”
His voice was soft and gentle, yet brooked no refusal.
Still as overbearing and unreasonable as ever.
I refused to take them. I hated it most when people forced me to do things I didn’t want to do.
We reached a stalemate. The atmospheric pressure in the room seemed to drop several degrees, causing Shen Xiao’s assistant to break out in a cold sweat.
Shen Xiao had a terrible temper, and everyone around him was terrified of him. I, however, wasn’t intimidated in the least. I pointed at the door and continued to defy him. “Get out. I don’t want to see you.”
Shen Xiao let out a sigh so faint it was barely audible. He didn’t get angry, but simply placed the glass of water in front of me. “If you want to get rid of me, then get better quickly.”
When Li Qing came to see me, her eyes were red.
She hugged me, and though she clearly intended to comfort me, she ended up sobbing uncontrollably herself.
If someone didn’t know better, they would have thought she was the one who had just gone through a devastating breakup.
Once she calmed down, Li Qing told me that she had finished handling most of the divorce proceedings.
She said that as compensation, Duan Yi was leaving all his assets to me and was willing to walk away with nothing.
Li Qing’s voice was raspy from crying. “Xu Chi, forget Duan Yi, and let yourself move on.”
My gaze drifted quietly to the window, catching sight of a falling leaf. I couldn’t quite describe the feeling in my heart, but I nodded and smiled. “Okay.”
It felt as though a large piece of my heart had gone missing, yet I didn’t feel particularly sad.
See? Forgetting someone… forgetting someone isn’t that hard after all.
