Chapter 5

I couldn’t help sighing.

If this younger guy had been born a few years earlier, maybe I never would have listened to that charlatan and stupidly cut my hair.

Maybe my luck really had been bad all these years. That was why I hadn’t managed to have a single relationship.

I had plenty of rotten peach blossoms, sure.

But with campus heartthrobs like Jiang Li and Lin Xunche setting the bar so high, there was no way I could accept anyone worse than them.

This was the first time I’d encountered a high-quality peach blossom like Song Chiyu.

I looked at my reflection in the display window.

My hair barely covered my ears. My makeup was exquisite, and I was tall and slender.

But none of that could hide the clumsy vibe my hair gave off.

I clenched my fists.

If I ever ran into that charlatan again, I would make him understand exactly why flowers were red.

My luck had been a little rotten lately.

Halfway home, it started raining. I didn’t have an umbrella, so I simply ran the rest of the way.

When I got back to my rental, the door was ajar.

My first thought was that someone had broken in to rob the place. I always kept a fruit knife in my bag, so I pulled it out.

Only after I pushed the door open did I see that it was the landlady.

The place was a complete mess.

“It’s not time for me to move out yet, is it?”

I remembered there were still three months left.

The landlady was a middle-aged woman, and she was fairly kind.

“Oh, sweetheart, the water pipe here burst today. I came over to get someone to repair it. The bathroom water almost flooded the downstairs unit. This place isn’t livable anymore, so you’d better go find somewhere else to rent.”

“That urgent?”

Fortunately, I’d run into a decent landlady. At least she wasn’t trying to scam me.

“Yes. I’ll refund the remaining rent and your deposit, all right?”

I went back to my room to pack.

Autumn clothes were thin, so there weren’t that many.

But I had so many odds and ends that I still ended up filling two suitcases.

Seeing that the rain still hadn’t stopped, I called Jiang Li directly.

It rang for ages before he finally picked up.

Jiang Li’s voice was tinged with exhaustion, a little hoarse, and also a little… suggestive.

“Cheng Cha, if this isn’t important, you’re dead.”

My eyes narrowed.

Something didn’t feel right.

What had he been doing just now? Why did it take him so long to answer?

I glanced at the time.

It was already around eleven.

Eleven. What a sensitive number.

A single man. A vigorous single man.

At this point, let me express my thoughts and feelings with three words: tsk, tsk, tsk.

You get it. Think about it carefully.

I spoke cautiously. “Did I interrupt you?”

There seemed to be the sound of Jiang Li turning over on the other end. He was completely rude. “Who else do you think woke me up?”

“Huh? You were sleeping just now?”

Maybe the emotion in my voice was too obvious.

Jiang Li noticed it sharply.

“You sound disappointed.”

“So disappointed.”

Then I immediately asked, “Were you dreaming just now?”

The other end went quiet for a moment.

“Yes.”

“Who did you dream about?”

Jiang Li stopped talking.

Five seconds later.

“Spit it out. You have three seconds, or I’m hanging up.”

“My place got flooded but I don’t have money right now so I want to stay at your place for a few nights or maybe lots of nights is that okay?”

Three seconds.

Cheng “Lightning Reflexes” Cha.

…

“Oh.”

“Oh? That’s all you have to say?” I roared into the phone.

“Then come over. It’s not like I said you couldn’t.”

His voice was a little sticky.

Like he’d just woken up.

But I knew he was definitely willing.

After all, when we had just graduated, Aunt Jiang had told me to stay at Jiang Li’s place first.

I had politely declined.

It would have gotten in the way of my romantic prospects.

“Since you’re being so enthusiastic, come pick me up.”

That would save me cab fare.

Then came his best friend’s wedding.

I grabbed my childhood...
