Chapter 6
Jiang Heng didn’t leave.
He kept waiting downstairs outside the complex.
When my best friend came home from work and saw him there,
he rushed straight up to her. “Qiao Wan, please talk some sense into Yaoyao for me.”
“Tell her to come home with me!”
Qiao Wan quickly stepped back as though he carried the plague.
“Jiang Heng, aren’t you busy finding your little assistant an apartment? How did you find the time to come here?”
“That—that was just a misunderstanding.”
“I don’t know whether it was a misunderstanding. All I know is, you’re dirty.”
Jiang Heng went pale again.
He tried desperately to explain. “Nothing happened between Xia Qiu and me! Honestly!”
“I slept on the sofa every night!”
Qiao Wan burst out laughing.
She leaned close to his ear. “Your body might have been on the sofa, but your heart was in your little assistant’s bed, wasn’t it?”
The tips of Jiang Heng’s ears turned red at once.
“You! What are you talking about?” he stammered.
Qiao Wan stepped back. “Jiang Heng, my advice is to sign the divorce agreement. Soon.”
“Let both of you keep a little dignity.”
She started to walk away, but he called her back.
“Xiaoxiao! We still have Xiaoxiao!”
“If we really get divorced, what happens to her?”
Qiao Wan paused, then kept walking.
By the time she came through the door, I had finished making dinner.
At the sight of the table full of food, she wrapped her arms around my arm.
“Yaoyao, you’re amazing!”
“I’ve been living on takeout and restaurant food. I’m so sick of it!”
“I haven’t had a home-cooked meal in ages!”
I gave her a pat. “Go on, wash your hands and eat.”
During dinner, Qiao Wan suddenly asked, “If you divorce Jiang Heng, what happens to Xiaoxiao?”
My chopsticks paused over a dish.
“She stays with me.”
“If you live in Wen City, you’ll be over a thousand kilometers from Qing City.”
“If you stay in Qing City, I’m afraid Jiang Heng will keep coming over.”
It really was a difficult problem.
“The first thing is to get divorced.”
“All right. I’ll find you a lawyer.”
Qiao Wan moved fast.
Three days later, Jiang Heng received a court summons.
It was sent to his office.
But Xia Qiu opened it by mistake.
When she saw what was inside, she was so frightened that her eyes instantly reddened.
“Mr. Jiang, I—I didn’t mean to!” she said, looking aggrieved.
“I thought they were company documents!”
Lin Mo raised a hand and slapped her across the face.
“Company documents or not, you have no right to open them!”
“How many times have I told you? I’m your supervisor. If you need anything, you come to me first. You don’t go over my head straight to Mr. Jiang!”
Stunned by the slap, Xia Qiu covered her cheek as tears pattered down her face.
She turned a wounded gaze on Jiang Heng,
trying to win his sympathy.
But all his attention was on the summons for the divorce case.
He had no attention to spare for her.
He waved a hand. “Both of you, leave.”
Lin Mo gave Xia Qiu a fierce glare and walked out in her high heels.
Xia Qiu stayed, still standing in front of Jiang Heng.
“Mr. Jiang…”
“I told you to leave. Didn’t you hear me?”
It was the first time he had spoken harshly to her.
Xia Qiu bit her lower lip, stamped her foot, and ran out.
