Chapter 4

On the eve of graduation, Jiang Huaizhou asked me if I wanted to apply to the same university as him.

“Weiwei’s health isn’t good. She definitely won’t go too far from home.”

“Let’s go to C University together. We’ll fly far away from here, so your parents can’t beat and scold you every day anymore.”

He said the words “fly far away” like he was joking, but they made my heart pound.

I agreed.

During the summer break after the college entrance exams, Chen Wei, for once, didn’t make trouble for me.

I found a part-time job because I wanted to earn my living expenses.

After all, I was already eighteen. Strictly speaking, the Chen Family no longer had any obligation to support me.

One day, I worked overtime until very late. When I got home, I accidentally overheard my parents talking in the study.

My adoptive mother said, “Chen Yin is already an adult. We don’t need to bother with her anymore. Besides, nothing’s happened to Weiwei’s health.”

My adoptive father hesitated. “Let’s wait a little longer. It doesn’t cost much to keep raising her anyway.”

“If something happens to Weiwei’s heart in the future, Chen Yin will come in handy. And even if we don’t end up needing her, we can marry her off in an alliance later and get a good price for her.”

When Chen Wei was twelve, she was diagnosed with heart disease.

Because she was young and it was discovered early, conservative treatment was an option.

But the Chen Family’s parents were still worried, so they secretly searched for a donor whose heart was a match.

I was the best match.

They went to the orphanage and adopted me, bringing me home as Chen Wei’s heart vessel.

I didn’t know how I made it back to my room.

I was terrified. What if my adoptive parents really wanted me to donate my heart?

They were the ones who had raised me. What reason did I have to refuse?

Even if I didn’t agree, against the Chen Family’s power and influence, could I really fight back?

The next day, I ran to find Jiang Huaizhou.

Aside from him, I didn’t know who else I could ask for help.

And yet, in front of the Jiang Family villa, I saw two people kissing.

Chen Wei complained, “Aren’t you going to C University with Chen Yin? Then why are you kissing me?”

Jiang Huaizhou sounded helpless. “My dear princess, don’t be unreasonable. Weren’t you the one who said you hated her and asked me to help you play a little trick on her?”

“I didn’t think she’d actually believe I was going to the same university as her.”

“I really want to see her face when she shows up to register and realizes you aren’t there.” Chen Wei looked full of anticipation.

“Just seeing her at home every day drives me crazy. She wants to steal Mom and Dad from me, steal everything that belongs to the Chen Family!”

From the first day I arrived at the Chen Family home, Chen Wei had been afraid I would replace her.

I never understood why she was so worried. My adoptive parents loved her so much.

Even my heart had been prepared for her.

Jiang Huaizhou coaxed her softly, “All right. Now she’ll be far, far away. Happy?”

I hid in the corner, spying on someone else’s happiness.

I had no family, and no friends.

The first time we met, Jiang Huaizhou hadn’t been coming to my rescue.

He had only been worried that Chen Wei hadn’t eaten.

Everything that came after was nothing but his deception.

I didn’t go to C University, nor did I stay local. Instead, I applied to a university very far away.
