Chapter 5

The next day, the man surnamed Zhao showed up right on time.

The moment Tan Xi saw him, her face lit up. She even took the initiative to go over and greet him, but he merely gave her a faint nod and showed no particular reaction.

She visibly wilted on the spot.

As for me, I had done my brows and lips, put on a midi skirt, and spritzed myself with LEMONGRASS & HONEY, a faint lemon scent threaded with a hint of honey. Feeling very pleased with myself, I followed him out, one after the other.

Granted, we were only going together to get an abortion… oh no, to get a tire patched. But I believed Tan Xi still managed to read revenge in the sway of my steps.

We spent the whole afternoon at the tire shop. Honestly, there were no surprises.

The man surnamed Zhao did not have much to say. He was quiet and not very talkative. Other than helping me coordinate the repairs, he spent the rest of the time sitting on a hard bench playing Fight the Landlord.

To be honest, his shapeless, over-washed old-man T-shirt and the big shorts full of loose threads did nothing to diminish his good looks. If anything, that unkempt appearance and his loose, detached air combined into a mysterious quality about him.

A kind of wildness that could not be underestimated.

It was strangely fascinating.

Once everything was taken care of, this mysterious man once again served as my driver. After he dropped me off at home, the dramatic little storyline between us would come to an end.

I had just gotten into the car when I received a call.

It was Yu Bixue.

I didn’t have a habit of blocking people, nor did I feel guilty, so I answered openly.

Who would have thought he would start off so rudely?

“What’s going on? Tan Xi said you won’t let her stay anymore?”

“Mm.”

“No, hold on. In broad daylight, where is she supposed to go? It’s too late for her to rent a place now, isn’t it?”

“She can stay at a hotel.”

“You!”

He panted harshly a few times on the other end and finally calmed down a little. “What, is this Designer Qu’s punishment? Is that all you’ve got?”

“Now that you’ve gone after her, what are you planning to do to me?”

I was just about to answer when the man beside me suddenly cut in. “Still to the entrance of your building?”

“Why don’t we go to the garage? The garage is more convenient.”

Before I could even react, the other end of the call exploded. Yu Bixue’s usual deliberately magnetic, raspy voice instantly cracked. “Who is that next to you? Why is it a young man?”

“Why is he taking you home?”

“Qu Ruoqiang! Say something! Have you gone mute?”

I had no chance to speak, because just then, we ran into a drunk-driving checkpoint. Several traffic police officers stopped the car, the reflective strips on their uniforms glaring under the lights. The man handed over his driver’s license and blew carefully into the breathalyzer.

Yu Bixue was still yelling incoherently through the phone. I was done. I hung up and blocked him in one smooth sequence. Out of earshot, out of mind.

After that, the car made it home without incident.

In truth, I had no intention of making this a big deal, nor did I intend to keep dragging Master Xiao Zhao into my mess. To thank him for wasting his time on this whole thing, I directly transferred him one thousand yuan.

He accepted the money and left straight away, as silent as ever.

The truth was, he was quiet, while I overthought everything.

Our temperaments did not match.

From here on out, separated by heaven and earth, perhaps we would never have a reason to meet again.

I was pregnant.

But I only wanted the baby, not the baby’s father.

With my belly about to become impossible to hide, I simply blocked him.

The very next day, though, he...
