Chapter 5

The call remained connected. I quickly scrolled through my WeChat messages with Xiao Zhang from Property Management.

“…My colleague and I went upstairs to check together. There’s nothing wrong like you described.”

This Xiao Zhang said he went with a colleague, but the man at the property office said Xiao Zhang was already on patrol and went by himself.

Their stories didn’t match.

Moreover, my girlfriend’s personality was like a little lamb; she wouldn’t even raise her voice when speaking to people. Making a scene and threatening to file a complaint over someone just doing their job was absolutely not something she would do.

Xiao Zhang was lying!

While I didn’t know his motive for lying yet, my intuition told me that I couldn’t let anyone know about my suspicions right now.

I suppressed my tone. “Fine. I was just worried and overreacted. Could you please put Xiao Zhang on the phone? I want to confirm a few things with him.”

If he were on a normal patrol, he should have returned to his post long ago after finishing his rounds.

Most importantly, neither my girlfriend nor Xiao Zhang had even asked where I got my information from.

And that Xiao Zhang knew I had ordered river snail rice noodles!

With my girlfriend’s personality, would she really tell a property management worker she barely knew about her food order?

Unless… Xiao Zhang had seen the delivery rider.

Seen what he was carrying…

I remembered the delivery rider saying he hadn’t seen anyone go up.

This was all too bizarre!

My mind was in a mess as I scrolled through the messages from the delivery rider. When I reached the very top, I froze in shock.

“…I just gave the food to that Raincoat Man. You have no idea, he just gave me a glare like he wanted to kill me. It was terrifying!”

The only person who had seen the delivery rider was the Raincoat Man!

Could Xiao Zhang actually be…

If that were the case, everything made sense.

The middle-aged man’s voice crackled over the phone again.

“Xiao Zhang? After he finished patrolling the 15th floor, he told me he was delayed by something. You’re right, why hasn’t he come back yet? That kid!”

“I’ll go look for him. Ugh, what a pain! Night shifts are usually never this much trouble.”

I shouted immediately, “Don’t go! Don’t go yet!”

If Xiao Zhang was actually the Raincoat Man and the middle-aged man went up there unaware, he would be walking straight into a death trap.

I was forced to voice my suspicion.

“I suspect your colleague, Xiao Zhang, is the one who was prying at my girlfriend’s door! Let’s add each other on WeChat. I’ll send you a photo; see if it’s your colleague!”

The middle-aged man muttered that I was a lunatic as he hung up the phone.

“Hello? Hello!”

The call was disconnected.

I slammed my fist against the steering wheel in frustration.

Then, I forced myself to calm down and quickly dialed the police again.

Once the call connected, the operator explained that they had indeed called the property management center immediately. After verifying there was no issue and seeing that I had chosen to withdraw the report, they had terminated the dispatch.

However, on their way back, their SMS emergency platform had received another report from a different number.

So, they were heading back again.

Though time had been lost, the good news was that the traffic was starting to clear, and they would arrive as soon as possible.

My heart, which had been dangling in suspense, finally felt like it had caught a piece of driftwood to stay afloat.

Furthermore, this confirmed that the middle-aged property worker wasn’t lying-at least he and Xiao Zhang weren’t working together.

Then I thought of my girlfriend’s abnormal behavior.

So, the delivery rider hadn’t lied to me…

Thinking that something might have already happened to her, my entire body began to shake uncontrollably.

No, it won’t happen. Nannan will be fine, she definitely won’t be in danger…

Looking at the stream of cars soaked in the rain outside, my heart rate continued to accelerate, nearly leaping out of my chest!

Only one thought remained in my mind: I couldn’t wait any longer.

But what was I supposed to do?!
