I was so frantic that I lost all sense of reason.

“Brother, are you still there?”

“Reply! Reply to me!”

“Joking around with someone else’s safety isn’t funny at all!”

“I’m definitely going to report you to the platform!”

Since he wasn’t replying to my messages, I called him directly.

Just then, the taillights of the car ahead of me suddenly flared.

I slammed on the brakes. Amidst the ear-piercing screech of tires, my car came to a halt barely half a meter from the vehicle in front of me!

The driver behind me honked furiously, but the sound was drowned out by the torrential rain. Otherwise, I felt like the owner would have gotten out of their car just to curse me out.

My back was instantly drenched in a cold sweat, and I finally regained my composure.

That was close-I almost rear-ended someone!

My phone had clattered to the floor during the sudden stop, wedged into a gap.

I struggled to fish it out of the crevice while keeping the car steady, as logic flooded back into my brain like a returning tide.

When a person is under extreme stress, their intelligence really does drop.

The call was still dialing, but it never connected.

I suppressed my spiraling emotions and forced myself to stay calm.

The most important thing right now wasn’t having a heated confrontation with the delivery rider; I had more critical matters to confirm.

Between the delivery rider and property management, someone had to be lying.

And regardless of who it was, it meant my girlfriend was in danger.

The horn behind me continued to blare in protest. I quickly grabbed my phone, sat up straight, and accelerated to keep up with the car ahead.

I couldn’t wait any longer. I had to find a way to get to my girlfriend’s place.

While my brain rapidly churned through potential plans, I used Siri to dial the landline for the Apple Apartments property management center.

I had specifically saved this number when Nannan moved in, after the property management sent someone to help with her registration. There was no way the number was wrong.

That meant the problem had to be with Xiao Zhang!

I remembered that shortly after I first called the property management landline, that Xiao Zhang had proactively requested to add me on WeChat.

His voice and profile picture clearly belonged to a young man.

But I remembered very clearly that the person who answered the phone at the management center was a middle-aged man with a heavy, gravelly voice.

It was a very distinctive voice. I remembered his name was Master Li.

The phone rang for a while before someone finally picked up.

The voice on the other end was indeed that middle-aged man. He sounded a bit groggy, as if I had woken him up.

“Hello, is this Master Li from Apple Apartments property management? I’m the one who called earlier, the boyfriend of Lin Nannan from Room 1503. Did you send staff to the 15th floor to check things out just now?”

Master Li sounded impatient.

“Oh, it’s you again… Yes, Xiao Zhang happened to be on patrol upstairs. He went straight to the 15th floor to check as soon as he got my call. He said there was no Raincoat Man trying to pick the lock-the door lock was perfectly fine. Xiao Zhang even said Ms. Lin was complaining about the property management because she was disturbed, and she was shouting about filing a complaint! I already explained all this when the police contacted us.”

“Besides, hasn’t Ms. Lin contacted you yet? Why are you still worried?”

“The people doing delivery work these days are a mixed bag; you can’t trust everything they say.”

I went numb instantly.

Because I had never mentioned that any of this had been told to me by the delivery rider…
