Chapter 13
Chapter 13
The carriage broke down, so on the way back, Fu Huai and I shared a horse.
Curled up in his arms, I chattered nonstop the entire way.
Every so often, Fu Huai let out a pleased laugh, his chest trembling lightly. “So Censor Zhang’s grandson was crippled by you. As expected of my wife.”
Censor Zhang was famous for his vicious tongue. He had cursed out countless civil and military officials, and Fu Huai had been on the receiving end more than once.
I turned my face, and my cheek happened to brush against Fu Huai’s lips. His gaze darkened slightly; it was so easy to stir his desire.
I asked, “Husband, do you think I did the right thing?”
My expression was clearly begging for praise.
Fu Huai deliberately leaned closer, bending forward to wrap me fully in his arms. He laughed again, delighted. “Everything my wife does is an act of justice, perfectly reasonable as well. What surprises me is that my wife is so delicate, yet so unyielding.”
As if speaking casually, I said, “Of course. No one is allowed to bully the people I care about. When necessary, I’ll risk everything.”
Fu Huai thought he understood the meaning behind my words. “In that case, I am also someone my wife cares about.”
With that, he grew even happier. Though he had survived an assassination attempt not long ago, at this moment he looked no different from some young commoner tasting first love for the very first time.
Once upon a time, Fu Huai and Linglong had counted as first love.
Later, Fu Huai and Shen Ru had pledged themselves to each other.
And now, he felt he had married me, this virtuous wife.
Men… no matter when it was, they could so easily feel as if they were falling in love for the first time.
As soon as we returned to the Duke’s Mansion, Shen Ru came out to meet us.
I flashed her a provocative smile, then shrank even deeper into Fu Huai’s arms.
But in the next moment, I pretended I had only just noticed Shen Ru. I immediately put some distance between myself and Fu Huai and lowered my voice. “Husband, hurry and let me down. Younger Sister Shen is here.”
Fu Huai clearly noticed the change in me.
He must have thought I was deliberately avoiding suspicion.
Fu Huai’s face flushed faintly. He dismounted first, then held me around the waist and helped me down.
Once my feet were steady, I moved two steps away from Fu Huai.
Fu Huai furrowed his brow slightly.
By rights, I was his wife. There was no need for me to act this way.
But not long ago, everyone knew that Fu Huai and Shen Ru were deeply attached, and that Shen Ru was the true confidante of his heart.
At that moment, Shen Ru rushed straight over. When she saw the wound on Fu Huai’s arm, she hurriedly asked, “General, you’re hurt?”
I added just the right amount of fuel to the fire. “Younger Sister Shen, Husband was injured by the assassins because he was protecting me.”
Killing someone was one thing; stabbing the heart was another.
For my sake, Fu Huai had been willing to throw himself in front of a blade.
Shen Ru’s face turned visibly pale.
The assassins she had arranged had wounded the man she loved. Meanwhile, I, her rival in love, was completely unharmed.
Shen Ru glared at me, one hand already gripping the whip at her waist.
Fu Huai knew Shen Ru’s temper. He barked in a low voice, “Shen Ru! What do you think you’re doing?”
Shen Ru froze for a moment. “General, I haven’t even done anything to this woman yet, and you’re already protecting her like this?! Do you even know what kind of person she is?! She isn’t as kind and good as you think!”
Here it came, here it came!
The show was starting again!
I advised her softly, “Younger Sister Shen, Husband is injured. The most important thing is to go inside and apply medicine first. Stop making trouble.”
Shen Ru refused to let it go. Thinking she had caught hold of my weakness, she insisted on clinging to Fu Huai at this moment.
I, however, looked worriedly at Fu Huai’s arm, tears gathering in my eyes. “Husband, does it hurt?”
Seeing me put on such an act, Shen Ru was so furious she lost control on the spot. “You wretch! You wretched woman! Why are you pretending to be so gentle and tender? You’re rotten to the core!”

The Scheming Beauty: Bad Seed
I was never born to be harmless.
At three, I stabbed the young master next door in the eye with a hairpin, simply because he had peeped at my mother while she was bathing.
At five, I...
