Chapter 2

I turned my head and saw the Sixth Princess.

She gave me quite a fright.

In that split second, I thought of those little girls in horror movies-they’re usually the big boss. The younger they are, the heavier their resentment.

I picked up the little rabbit and handed it to her.

“Sixth Princess, the rabbit is fixed.”

The Sixth Princess took the rabbit in astonishment. A look of pleasant surprise crossed her face as she hugged it to her chest, but just as a smile began to form, she suppressed it and said coldly, “Who permitted you to touch my rabbit?”

*Hah, you brat.*

Not only did I touch it once, I’m going to touch it again.

I let out a sigh.

“This servant originally planned to make a protective cover to keep the rabbit safe. Since the Princess won’t allow me to touch it, then forget it…”

“Here, go make it quickly.”

She handed it over, her face full of urgency.

I wanted to laugh, but I tried my best to hold it in and whispered, “Yes.”

Glass existed in this era, but its transparency was mediocre. Aside from that, amber or crystal could be used to make a cover, but the Sixth Princess certainly wouldn’t be able to get her hands on those here.

I used gauze to create a cover similar to a palace lantern. I found a small round wooden board for the base and layered it with cotton and silk to make a soft cushion. After placing the little rabbit on top and covering it, a delicate rabbit nest was complete.

While I was working, the Sixth Princess kept circling around me. I tentatively asked her to help pass me some tools.

She put on a cold face and refused.

After a while, I deliberately claimed I couldn’t find the bamboo skewers, letting my gaze wander back and forth across the table and the floor.

The Sixth Princess couldn’t wait any longer. She fished out the skewers and handed them to me.

“Here. How could you not find these?”

I took the skewers and thanked her earnestly.

“Princess, your eyes are so sharp. You found them instantly.”

The Sixth Princess gave a huff of disdain, but she tilted her little face up, looking a bit proud.

I gained a bit of insight into the Sixth Princess’s character: she rarely received praise, and her language was very aggressive. Even when she could speak kindly, she chose not to.

Once the rabbit was finished, the Sixth Princess became much better behaved.

She held the rabbit and watched it for a long time. She was still sad about the cracks on the rabbit, but she had clearly accepted the reality.

Taking advantage of the moment, I called people in to tidy up the room.

Aunt An said with relief, “The Princess hasn’t been this happy in a long time.”

I froze for a second.

A classic NPC line echoed in my mind: *[The Young Master hasn’t laughed like this in a long time.]*

After my shift ended, I returned to the dormitory.

Qiushuang, my roommate, sneered, “You’re really something, aren’t you? You’ve only been here a day and you’ve already won the favor of the Princess and Aunt An. You’re more capable than us veterans.”

Living in the same room as my colleagues after work… I really don’t want to work this job at all.

I pulled two handmade hairpins out of my bag. They were made from fabric scraps, but the color coordination was beautiful, making them perfect gifts.

I gave one to each of my other two roommates, pointedly skipping Qiushuang.

Qiushuang felt the isolation and grew incensed.

“What do you mean by this?”

I gave a derisive laugh and didn’t answer her, falling straight onto my bed to sleep.

After looking after a child all day, I was exhausted.

I didn’t want to deal with another giant infant; this one wasn’t even cute.

However, in the middle of the night, I was still woken up by a scream.

I looked at the other three; none of them moved.

One of them, named Fangcao, said softly, “Go back to sleep. It’s like this every day. You’ll get used to it later.”

From the looks of it, they really were used to it. Qiushuang was sleeping like a dead pig.

But I couldn’t sleep anymore.

I threw on a cloak and went out, where I saw Aunt An, who had also gotten up and dressed.

She was staring coldly at the Princess’s bedroom, looking angry yet helpless.

Aunt An worked the day shift, while another woman, Aunt Song, worked the night shift. They didn’t interfere with each other.

The one attending to the Princess’s sleep inside the bedroom was Aunt Song.

The Sixth Princess’s crying and shouting drifted out from the room: “Get out! I’m telling you to get out! I don’t want you staying with me!”

Aunt Song’s voice was icy: “Princess, you are seven years old. You’ll be a big girl soon. You should understand the rules. This servant is doing this for your own good.”

“I’ll beat you to death! I’ll beat you to death!”

That night passed in a cycle of screaming, shouting, silence, and then more screaming, shouting, and silence.

I was still incredibly sleepy when I got up.

I thought to myself, no wonder I was able to get into Funing Palace just by bribing someone with silver. It turns out everyone knew this place was awful, and no one wanted to come.
