Chapter 7

“Ah! Don’t shoot!”

The tomb robber threw both hands up, staring at me in shock.

“You have a gun. You’re a cop? Undercover?”

I was even more shocked.

What the hell? Isn’t this gun yours? I just picked it up. Did you lose your memory or something?

The two of us stared at each other for a while before the tomb robber finally realized what was going on. His weathered face flushed red.

“Damn it, little girl, how dare you pretend to be a cop and try to fool Brother Qiang.

“Shoot? Do you even know how to fire that thing?

“Want me to teach you?”

As soon as he finished, he took one step toward me, then suddenly shrieked, clutched his chest, and staggered backward.

“Fuck! Where did that kid come from?”

I was speechless. This guy was way too dramatic.

A child inside an ancient tomb could only be either a manifestation of a tomb spirit or a buried corpse that had undergone corpse transformation.

Tomb spirits carried an intense baleful aura, and zombies gave off such a foul stench you could smell them from nearly a kilometer away. Right now, there wasn’t the slightest strange odor in the passage. Who was he trying to fool?

“Enough. Stop acting. You-”

Before I could finish, the tomb robber suddenly let out a scream of absolute terror, turned, and ran.

The only light source in the passage was still in his hand. The moment he fled, the entire corridor plunged into darkness.

Standing in the middle of the tomb passage, I felt something cold brush the back of my hand. I froze, then called out tentatively, “Murong Yue?”

That person took my hand in response. One finger after another slid between mine, locking our hands together, palm to palm.

Goose bumps broke out all over me.

“Murong Yue, are you some kind of pervert?”

“Qiao Moyu, Grandpa and I are over here-”

Murong Yue’s voice came from far away.

“Shit!”

I cursed under my breath. Acting on instinct, I flung that hand away while my other hand swiftly formed the Thunder Ancestor Hand Seal.

“Primordial clarity of Yuqing, true talisman sworn by decree; shift and drive the two qi, merge them as one into truth. Five Thunders, Five Thunders, gather at once to Huangning; clouds condense and transform, lightning roars and thunder strikes; hear my call and arrive, swiftly unleash the sound of yang!”

Crack!

A bolt of lightning as thick as a thumb slashed past. The grip on my hand loosened, and a black shadow darted before my eyes, moving so fast I couldn’t make out what it was.

Grandfather Murong turned on his flashlight and walked over. By the light, I lowered my head and glanced at my hand.

There were five pitch-black fingerprints on the back of it. Judging by their length, they should have belonged to a child.

A chill crept through my heart.

It wasn’t a tomb spirit, and it wasn’t a zombie. Then what on earth was it?

“Sect Leader, why did that tomb robber run off?”

“Forget him for now. Let’s go inside and take a look.”

I had a feeling something was wrong with this tomb. Those words on the wall kept flashing through my mind every now and then.

“If you see a child under the age of ten, close your eyes.”

If those rules really had been made up by the tomb robbers to scare people, then why specifically a ten-year-old child?

In the Han dynasty, children under the age of ten were collectively called yellow-mouthed children. If a child died before reaching ten, it was considered an early death and they were not allowed to be buried in the ancestral grave, or it would harm the family’s feng shui.

The family would usually use a jar-coffin burial, placing the body of the deceased child into a specially made clay jar and burying it nearby, close to the residence.

Judging by the structure of this tomb passage, the owner of this tomb was clearly someone of high status. In a tomb like this, there should be almost no chance of finding a child who had died young.
