Chapter 1
“If I catch the little bastard who wrote this, I’ll beat him to death!”
Project manager Zhu Hongsheng clenched his fists and angrily jabbed a finger around at the workers nearby.
“You’d better come clean while I’m still asking nicely. Whoever reports the culprit gets two thousand yuan. Now talk. Who did it?”
“Brother Zhu, it really wasn’t us. Who wouldn’t want to earn that kind of money? This whole thing was just too damn strange.”
A dark-skinned middle-aged man wiped the sweat from his forehead and, trembling, explained what had happened from the beginning.
The worker’s name was Old Zhou. Last night, he and two other workers had been on night watch. To pass the time, the three of them played three-card poker until midnight.
Old Zhou got sleepy, pushed his cards away, and was about to go to bed.
The moment he stood up, the other two workers suddenly went pale.
“A ghost! There’s a ghost-”
“Heh, look at you two cowards. You only lost sixty yuan. Do you really have to scare me like this?”
Old Zhou thought they were joking and didn’t take it seriously. He turned around with a laugh.
“Let me see. Where’s this ghost?”
Very quickly, his smile froze on his face.
The temporary workers’ shed was basically built from color-coated steel sheets. It had only been put up two days ago, so the inside was still very clean. But on the grayish-white wall behind Old Zhou, a muddy handprint had suddenly appeared.
It was as if someone had braced one hand against the wall and used the other to write several lines of bright red words, stroke by stroke.
Rules of the corpse-nurturing ground:
1. Do not feed raw meat to the corpses.
2. If you see a child under the age of ten, close your eyes immediately.
3. Eat those rats.
After reading those lines, the more timid worker rolled his eyes back and fainted on the spot. Old Zhou was a bit braver. He and the remaining worker scrambled and crawled out of the shed, then called Zhu Hongsheng from outside.
Of course, Zhu Hongsheng didn’t believe them. He was convinced Old Zhou and the others were pulling a prank. After cursing them out, he told them to get back to work the next day.
But the story had already spread across the construction site. The other workers refused to keep working no matter what. Zhu Hongsheng had no choice but to report the situation to the boss.
The owner of this plot of land had the surname Lou. He was my roommate Lou Qianqian’s paternal uncle. He specifically asked me to come to the site and perform a ritual to calm the workers down.
My name is Qiao Moyu. I’m a junior at Nanjiang University, and also the only Earth Master successor of this generation.
As the saying goes: a first-rate Earth Master observes the stars, a second-rate wind master searches for the water outlet, and third-rate practitioners wander all over the land. Most people active in the world today are ordinary feng shui masters. In ancient times, those who truly mastered the art of observing the stars and reading qi all served in the Imperial Astronomical Bureau, working for the imperial household.
The ancestor of my Qiao Family was the director of the Imperial Astronomical Bureau, and also the hereditary Sect Leader of the Feng Sect.
Originally, an Earth Master only dealt with feng shui and did not perform rituals or exorcisms like this. But the economy hasn’t been great these days, so a person’s scope of business can’t be too rigid.
Besides, it happened to be summer break, and I didn’t have classes. So I accepted the job without hesitation.
