Chapter 14
We were whispering among ourselves when a violent pounding suddenly erupted from downstairs.
*Bang-Bang-Bang-*
One strike followed another, making the entire wooden door shake violently. I hurried to the window to take a look.
The old man threw on some clothes and stomped toward the door in a rage.
“It’s the crack of dawn, the sun isn’t even up yet! Who is it now?”
The moment the door opened, the old man’s eyes widened. He stumbled back two steps in disbelief.
“Ping-Pingping? Is that you, Pingping?”
Wang Cuiping stood at the threshold, still wearing that tattered dress. she flashed the old man a grotesque smile.
“It’s me, Father. I’m home.”
God help us. I never expected that the house we picked at random would turn out to be Wang Cuiping’s family home!
Wang Cuiping had been personally sent up the mountain by her father. She harbored a deep, burning hatred for everyone in Maogou Village. Now that she was free, she was likely planning a massacre.
“Pingping, how did you get back? Did the Wild Man let you go? What on earth happened?”
The old man looked anxious, but Wang Cuiping’s expression shifted. She glared at him with a face full of venomous resentment.
“You didn’t want me to come back, did you? None of you wanted me back!”
A second later, a blood-curdling scream erupted from downstairs. Wang Cuiping had ripped off both his arms and was tearing into them with large, ravenous bites.
She finished devouring her father in short order. Her expression softened again as she looked up toward the second-floor window, murmuring to herself, “Father, I really want to go back and see my old room.”
The three of us ducked our heads back, exchanging nervous glances.
We were screwed. Her room… it couldn’t be the one we were currently in, could it?
Rhythmic footsteps sounded on the stairs. With no time to think, I quickly slapped a Breath-Concealing Talisman onto each of us, and the three of us scrambled under the bed.
The king-sized bed was more than enough to cover Hua Yuling and me, but Jiang Haoyan was too tall. He had to tuck his legs in, curling his entire body like a shrimp.
The door creaked open. A pair of slender feet stopped right in front of us.
We held our breath, not daring to move an inch.
Wang Cuiping walked around the room, rifling through this and touching that. Then, she walked back to the bedside and lay down.
Soon, the faint sound of an infant crying drifted from above us.
This time, Wang Cuiping didn’t immediately eat the Ghost Child. Instead, she gave birth to them one after another. As soon as the infants hit the bed, they opened their eyes and began crawling around.
One of the infant spirits tumbled off the bed, landing right before our eyes.
It had a furry body like a macaque, but its lower half was a snake’s tail. Covered in slime, it stared at us curiously with massive, pitch-black eyes.
I remained motionless. Hua Yuling squeezed her eyes shut and buried her head in Jiang Haoyan’s shoulder.
Jiang Haoyan immediately reached out to push her away, clearly trying to avoid any physical contact.
Hua Yuling was livid. She reached out to pinch Jiang Haoyan. I warned them both with a sharp look: *”Don’t move! If you keep making noise, we’re all dead!”*
Jiang Haoyan’s eyes screamed: *”She’s taking advantage of me!”*
Hua Yuling’s eyes shot back: *”As if!”*
I glared at Jiang Haoyan: *”Why are you being so petty? Letting her lean on you for a second won’t kill you!”*
Jiang Haoyan: *”I don’t want to.”*
While our eyes were flying back and forth, the infant spirit crouched in front of us, watching with curiosity. A second later, its mouth puckered as it prepared to shriek. I lunged forward and covered its mouth.
“Third Uncle-Third Uncle, are you home? I heard shouting just now. Did something happen?”
Another knock sounded from downstairs. Wang Cuiping sat up abruptly and giggled. “Tee-hee… babies, go out and play. There’s lots of delicious food outside.”
Wang Cuiping flew out the window, followed by a swarm of infant spirits. A chorus of agonizing screams soon rose from below.
This was bad. She was birthing so many Ghost Children and not eating them; she clearly intended to use them to slaughter the entire village.
We scrambled out from under the bed. I subdued the little ghost and tossed it onto the mattress.
“To the village Ancestral Hall. Now.”
