Chapter 5
Chapter 5
“Everyone, stop arguing!”
Jiang Haoyan’s voice trembled as he took a step closer to me.
“There’s someone up ahead-”
The four of us were all wearing professional outdoor searchlights on our heads. We looked together in the direction Jiang Haoyan was pointing, our four beams of light converging into one, illuminating every detail of the ground in front of us.
Lying quietly on the stone bricks was a person.
He wore a windbreaker of an indiscernible color, covered in dust. He lay face down on the floor, one hand pinned beneath his body while the other was splayed wide, fingers straining as if pointing toward something in the distance.
“It’s just a corpse. It looks like he has something in his hand.”
Song Feifei squinted for a moment before walking over curiously and squatting down beside the body.
Just as Song Feifei reached out to pull the hand from beneath him, the corpse suddenly twitched.
“Ah-!”
Song Feifei let out a blood-curdling scream and scrambled backward on all fours.
I crossed my arms and shook my head.
“Lingzhu, this apprentice of yours is no good!”
“I’ve always known you were greedy and short-sighted, but I didn’t expect you to take on such a cowardly apprentice just for money. If word gets out, it’ll really ruin Maoshan’s prestigious reputation.”
“Jiang Haoyan, go take a look-”
“This is my classmate, Jiang Haoyan. He has a constitution of pure Yang and excellent bones. He’s been crying and begging me to take him as my disciple, but I haven’t agreed yet. Someone like him? Your Maoshan sect would probably fight tooth and nail to get him. But for me… well, he’s still lacking a little something.”
Jiang Haoyan: “…”
Lu Lingzhu rolled her eyes.
“Right, right, right. We in the Maoshan sect have plenty of useless disciples. It can’t be helped; that’s just what happens when a sect gets large and crowded. It’s not like your Earth Master lineage, where there’s only one person per generation. If you don’t find someone capable, the entire line ends the moment something goes wrong.”
As we bickered, the corpse began to move more violently. Its back bulged, and its limbs trembled.
Song Feifei was so terrified she ducked behind Lu Lingzhu.
“Lingzhu, stop arguing and get your dharma tools out!”
Before Lu Lingzhu could act, a rat suddenly scurried out from the corpse’s sleeve. It squeaked, startled by the light, and ducked back inside.
I let out a chuckle.
“Using dharma tools to deal with a rat? Isn’t that a bit overkill?”
I walked over and flipped the corpse over.
The rats underneath scattered in all directions, and the object in the corpse’s hand rolled onto the ground.
When I saw what it was, my eyes widened in shock.
“Holy crap… how does he have one of those?”

[Does Chinese Taoist magic work on foreign ghosts?]
[I have no idea. I’m on my way to a cemetery castle right now. I’ll let you all know when I get back.]
