We pressed ourselves against the wall, holding our breath. These mummies were supposed to be in the stone sarcophagi back in the room, having chased Lu Lingzhu and the others down here. Now, unable to find their targets, they were wandering aimlessly, slowly making their way back upstairs.

We stood flat against the wall, holding our breath for dear life. In the pitch-black darkness, we watched as one mummy after another shuffled past us.

In the silent dark, the only thing I could hear was the frantic pounding of my own heart.

I held my breath until I was dizzy and spots danced before my eyes. Just as the last mummy passed us, Song Feifei couldn’t take it anymore. She suddenly let go, her head snapping to the side as she let out a dry heave.

“Urgh-”

The mummy’s footsteps stopped. It whipped its head around, the bandages on its skull fluttering slightly as its glowing green eyes locked onto us.

“Run!”

Every mummy sprang into motion. Their limbs were stiff, yet they scrambled over one another to chase us. Curiously, however, once we ran down the stairs, they came to a halt on the steps and refused to move further.

We ran a short distance deeper into the area before realizing they weren’t following. We collapsed onto the ground, gasping for air.

I truly couldn’t wrap my head around it.

“What’s going on? Why are there mummies here?”

Song Feifei, however, looked ecstatic.

“We’re going to be rich! This castle has to be from the Middle Ages at the very least.”

She explained that during a certain period in European history, the nobility was obsessed with purchasing and consuming products made from mummies. At one point, mummies were eaten so frequently that they almost went out of stock.

People back then firmly believed that mummies possessed immense medicinal value, capable of treating everything from epilepsy to intestinal infections. Many aristocrats would soak mummies in wine or process them into sausages and biscuits.

Beyond consumption, mummies were also ground into powder to create a unique pigment called “Mummy Brown.” It was used to render human skin tones with a natural, translucent quality, and many world-famous paintings utilized this very pigment.

After listening to Song Feifei’s explanation, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of pity for these mummies.

How tragic. Our grave robbers might steal some funerary goods at most, but these high and mighty European nobles actually dug people up to eat them and turn them into paint.

Song Feifei continued to marvel.

“For this castle to house so many mummies, the owner must have been more than just wealthy; they must have had incredible status.”

“Even if there’s nothing else here, if we each take one mummy, we could sell them for tens of millions! Hahaha-”

Huh? Tens of millions?

My eyes lit up.

“Then we’re definitely taking these. I’ll perform an exorcism in a bit to drive out whatever wandering souls are hiding inside.”

Mummies had been dead for thousands of years; their original souls had long since dissipated. The reason they could move now was likely due to local wandering spirits inhabiting the remains. I would just need to perform a ritual to cross them over. It might take some time, but for that much money, it was well worth the effort.
