Chapter 2

After I got home, my best friend blew up my phone.

“What is going on with you and that college boy?”

I told her everything. “The day Qin Huai threw that banquet for him, I slept with him.”

My best friend shrieked in disbelief. “What?!”

I hadn’t planned on telling her about Qin Huai cheating.

But I couldn’t keep it in.

After I finished, I felt much better.

My best friend launched into a tirade. “Those two bastards! How dare he?!”

She had never imagined Qin Huai was that kind of man. Neither had I.

After all, he was such a good person.

In the eyes of his family, his lover, his friends, and even outsiders, he was a very good man.

But someone that outstanding had actually rotted through on the inside long ago.

If I were twenty, I would have screamed myself hoarse questioning him and fought him over it.

But I was already twenty-seven.

All I could think was that college boys really did have good stamina and good bodies.

My best friend asked when I planned to divorce him.

“I don’t have any plans for that right now. Whether I divorce him or not doesn’t make much difference to me.”

She stopped talking and simply started sending me handsome men.

Young, good-looking, great bodies. Which one of them wasn’t more tempting than Qin Huai?

But when I looked at their photos, all I could think about was Jiang Songye’s face.

He might not be able to speak, but he knew how to put his head down and work hard.

Doing it while crying.

The third time I ran into Jiang Songye was at the hospital.

Since I couldn’t be sure when Qin Huai had started cheating, and I didn’t know if he had picked up anything outside, I decided to go to the hospital for a checkup, just in case. I figured I might as well get a full physical while I was there.

That was how I saw Jiang Songye in the hallway, clutching a payment notice and silently sobbing.

When he cried, his shoulders trembled. One hand covered his face. He looked so helpless it was pitiful.

I shouldn’t have gotten involved.

After all, he had clearly rejected me that day.

But somehow, my heart softened.

I had someone look into it and found out that Jiang Songye’s mother was also in this hospital.

She lay in the ICU every day, burning through money like water. The hundred thousand Qin Huai had given him was spent very quickly.

The money he earned from part-time jobs couldn’t keep up with the rate the hospital bills piled up.

Qin Huai would only pay his tuition and living expenses. He wouldn’t pay for his mother’s treatment.

Now her condition had worsened and she needed surgery. The doctor told him to prepare at least one million.

How could he possibly come up with one million?

So I quietly paid the bill for him.

Consider it a good deed for my own karma.

Good deeds were supposed to be anonymous, but somehow Jiang Songye found out I was the one who had paid. A few days later, he came to find me.

I was drinking with my best friend at a bar when he suddenly appeared in front of me.

My best friend nudged me with her elbow and waggled her brows. “Here’s your chance. Go on, go!”

I took him to one of the bar’s lounge rooms.

He skillfully typed on his phone and played the audio. “Thank you for helping me. I will repay you.”

I sat on the bed and looked at him with a half smile.

“How are you going to repay me?”

He panicked a little and kept typing. “I’ll pay you back, with interest.”

The truth was, he didn’t know how to repay me either.

To him, money was very important, so that was the only way he could think of to repay me.

But I wasn’t short on money.

I brushed the pointed toe of my high heel against his calf.

Startled, he took several steps back.

“You know what I want.”

From beginning to end, what I wanted was his body.

Jiang Songye’s expression twisted with conflict. After a long internal struggle, he thought for a long time, then gritted his teeth and took off his clothes.

I was still surprised that he had actually agreed when he suddenly knelt in front of me. With trembling hands, he reached for the zipper of my dress, then lifted his head and kissed me clumsily.

His face was so red it looked like blood might drip from it. He looked like he was on the verge of tears. And yet he was still so earnest, so obedient, as he “repaid” me.
