Chapter 5

At that time, Lu Cheng’an and I were caught in a strange cold war.

The incident that night, when I lost control of my emotions and questioned Lu Cheng’an, angering him, quickly spread through the company.

Amy privately gave me a thumbs up and said, “Miss Song, you’re quite the warrior. It’s been a long time since President Lu lost his temper.”

I just smiled and said nothing.

But fortunately, Lu Cheng’an wasn’t someone who brought personal emotions into work.

I went to and from work as usual. I caught Lu Cheng’an’s attention during a lunch break one day.

That day was the 28th day since my rebirth.

The receptionist was bringing a plate of washed fruit to Lu Cheng’an’s office.

As she passed me, I glanced over unintentionally and noticed that among the few kinds of fruit, three were ones Lu Cheng’an was allergic to.

I instinctively called out to the receptionist and said, “Lu Cheng’an is allergic to all citrus fruits. These three are no good. Go swap them out.”

The receptionist looked at me in shock.

I was just thinking what kind of employee this was, not even paying attention to the boss’s dietary needs, when I turned around and saw Lu Cheng’an standing behind me.

This was our first conversation since that night.

He stood there quietly, gazing at me with a heavy look, and then asked placidly, “How did you know?”

Of course I knew. My favorite fruits are citrus ones, like oranges, grapefruits, pomelos, etc.

After I got together with Lu Cheng’an, whenever I ate them, I liked to feed him too, and he always obediently opened his mouth, never refusing.

At the time, he never mentioned his allergy, until one time I discovered him taking antihistamines.

Why do I remember such a small thing so clearly?

Because when I got angry, pounded on him, and asked why he hadn’t told me about the allergy, he suddenly smiled.

He was always aloof and not good at expressing emotions, but that smile held a lot of affection. He said, “You fed me; I didn’t want to refuse.”

This was our early romance. From an outsider’s perspective, it might seem a bit melodramatic and ridiculous, but that’s what it’s like when you like someone, all that being lovey-dovey and sweet, doing all sorts of foolish things in others’ eyes.

Even if it was Lu Cheng’an.

I snapped back from my memories, looked at Lu Cheng’an, and said with a feigned nonchalant tone, “Aren’t I supposed to be your future girlfriend? Of course I’d investigate your preferences in advance.”

He looked at me with tightly knitted brows, and a hint of wariness and caution actually appeared in his eyes.

He paused, then looked up and said coldly, “Miss Song, this is not a place for playing house. None of us have time to play games with you.”

“And I’ll emphasize once more: I already have a girlfriend.”

I didn’t know why he thought I was playing.

To maintain my persona, I had to feign indifference and say, “Just a girlfriend, not a wife. I still have a chance, don’t I?”

I must have seemed utterly detestable like this. In any novel, I’d probably be the vicious, scheming supporting female character trying to steal someone’s boyfriend.

So shameless.

Lu Cheng’an surely thought the same. He looked at me coldly, his dark eyes sharp and merciless.

He ignored me and turned to enter his office.
