Chapter 3
He pulled a long face and said, “She’s not my sister. My dad just picked her up from somewhere.”
Children are naturally perceptive.
Since my brother didn’t like me and I was the new kid from the countryside, everyone isolated me.
When the PE teacher organized one-on-one matches, I was always the one left out.
It was a little sad.
But I could endure it.
Several months passed like this.
Winter arrived.
When I woke up early one morning, I noticed my Adoptive Mother looked unwell.
I asked her about it in a low voice, but she just glared at me. “Are you wishing for something to happen to me?”
I didn’t dare ask any more questions.
After leaving the house, I realized I had forgotten yesterday’s homework.
I turned back home to get it.
When I got there, I found my Adoptive Mother collapsed in the living room. No matter how much I called out to her, she didn’t respond.
My head throbbed, and I felt as if cold winds were rushing into my chest from all directions.
I stumbled out of the house and knocked on the neighbor’s door.
Uncle Liu and Aunt Liu hurriedly drove their pickup truck to take my Adoptive Mother to the hospital.
I insisted on going with them.
Fear gripped me like countless tentacles. I whimpered softly, tears streaming down my face uncontrollably.
They fell, drop by drop, onto my Adoptive Mother’s face.
I don’t know how long I cried before I heard a familiar, cold voice in my ear: “Are you mourning me? I’m not dead yet!”
My Adoptive Mother had woken up.
My lips wouldn’t stop trembling. After a long moment, I let out a loud wail and began to sob uncontrollably.
My Adoptive Mother frowned. “You’re too loud.”
Aunt Liu whispered from the side, “She was so scared. Don’t frighten the child any further.”
Chu Qi rushed to the hospital after school. With red eyes, he pointed at my nose and cursed, “This is all your fault! Mom was perfectly fine, but as soon as you showed up, she got sick!”
Fortunately, it turned out my Adoptive Mother had iron-deficiency anemia. After receiving an IV drip and being given some medicine and a diet plan, the doctor allowed her to be discharged.
She still needed bed rest, so my Aunt prepared a day’s worth of meals every noon and brought them over.
Three days passed, and my Adoptive Mother’s complexion still hadn’t improved.
I grew desperate.
In the kitchen, I secretly cut my hand with a fruit knife. Bright red blood dripped down, falling into the soup my Aunt had brought like rolling beads.
I didn’t know how many drops fell, but I started to feel dizzy.
Just then, Chu Qi roared from behind me, “What are you doing dripping blood into the soup?”
“Your blood is poisonous! You’re trying to kill my mom, aren’t you?”
He ran over and pushed me hard. The back of my head slammed against the doorknob.
The pain turned my mind blank.
My Adoptive Mother was also startled by the commotion. She wrapped my finger with a tissue first, then asked coldly, “What do you think you’re doing?”

When my Adoptive Father first saw me, I was eating a bowl of spoiled rice.
Hungry flies were fighting me for the food, and I couldn’t even spare a hand to shoo them away.
