Chapter 2
Thank goodness I had been given the chance to start over.
I pressed my lips together, but still shook my head.
“No. I don’t want to steal Elder Sister’s talent anymore.”
Elder Sister burst out laughing and tapped me on the forehead.
“How is that stealing? As long as Suisui wants it, be it the moon in the sky or frost upon the earth, Elder Sister will find a way to keep it for you.”
I bit my lower lip lightly and said, “Then what if… I don’t want to marry the Second Young Master of the Yongning Marquis Manor?”
Ever since Father remarried, we sisters had been invisible in this household.
No elder cared about our daily needs.
And when it came to marriage, no one would help us plan.
In my previous life, I had managed to marry Pei You smoothly.
Elder Sister must have spent so much effort to make that happen.
I didn’t want all her hard work to go to waste.
But life in the Marquis Manor had been too bitter. In this life, I didn’t want to endure it again.
I lowered my head.
I didn’t dare meet Elder Sister’s disappointed eyes.
But Elder Sister said, “So it turns out Suisui doesn’t like him! Very well, then Elder Sister won’t write to him for you this time!”
I snapped my head up and met Elder Sister’s smiling eyes.
I couldn’t hold back anymore. Sobbing, I threw myself into Elder Sister’s arms.
“B-but Elder Sister spent so much effort on this…”
She caught me with a beaming smile.
“It doesn’t matter. Elder Sister still has several literary correspondents around Suisui’s age. We can take our time choosing.”
She gently wiped away my tears and said earnestly, “Suisui, you are the most precious treasure Mother left for Elder Sister in this world. No matter what you do, you never have to feel guilty toward Elder Sister.”
“All right now. If you don’t want to marry Pei You, then you won’t. Why shed tears and make Elder Sister’s heart ache? Stop crying. Elder Sister will take you home right away.”
After bidding farewell to the lady of the Marquis Manor, I followed behind Elder Sister as we walked down the emerald-green corridor.
I had walked the corridors of the Marquis Manor for ten years.
But never once had my heart felt as light as it did now.
A warm breeze brushed my face. The sky was clear, the sun bright, and spring filled the space beneath the eaves.
Pei You stepped out from around the corner.
He wore a wide-sleeved robe, his raven-black hair bound with a jade hairpin. His features were handsome, his bearing elegant and effortless.
Anyone who saw him would have to praise him as a graceful young gentleman.
Elder Sister shifted sideways to shield me behind her, then greeted him with me in tow.
“Greetings, Second Young Master Pei. Thank you for your household’s hospitality. It is my fault for suddenly feeling unwell and being unable to stay longer. I will take my younger sister home first.”
Pei You’s fine brows drew together. His gaze shifted slightly and landed lightly on me.
“Then… your younger sister?”
Elder Sister answered smoothly, without betraying a thing.
“A few days ago, I was to blame for overindulging in wine and writing some nonsense on paper. I hope Second Young Master will not laugh at me for it.”
Pei You’s gaze did not move. He chuckled.
“Nonsense?”
Elder Sister smiled faintly.
“Yes. Second Young Master, please do not take it seriously.”
But Pei You said without even thinking, “And what if I have taken it seriously?”
He frowned, his tone displeased and puzzled.
“Ming Hui, besides me, who else could you entrust your foolish, simple-minded younger sister to?”
His tone was far too certain.
It infuriated Elder Sister, who treasured me like a precious jewel.
Her face instantly turned cold.
“Second Young Master, mind your words. Our Suisui is sweet and charmingly innocent. She has always been the one to choose others. Someone like you, Second Young Master, would never catch her eye.”
Suppressing the fear of Pei You left from my previous life, I poked my head out from behind Elder Sister and immediately followed up.
“I, Ming Sui, would sooner spend the rest of my life before an ancient Buddha with only a solitary lamp for company than have the slightest connection to you, Second Young Master. My marriage is not something Second Young Master Pei needs to concern himself with.”
Under Pei You’s livid glare, Elder Sister took me by the hand and swept away.
