Chapter 2
Chapter 2
After leaving the hospital, I went with Peng You to his company.
On the way, Peng You told me the truth.
The man who had been doing this Yunfo run with Dashun was named Wang Cheng. He was a relative from Peng You’s hometown, and after learning the trade for only half a year, he had already started shouting every day about getting on the road and making money.
This job was a short haul with a high commission, and Dashun was there to lead him, so Peng You hadn’t thought too much of it and let Wang Cheng tag along.
No one expected Wang Cheng to suddenly lose his mind halfway there and call Peng You, demanding more money.
Peng You had had a bit to drink at the time, and his temper wasn’t great to begin with. He cursed Wang Cheng out over the phone. As a result, the guy actually turned the truck around and hauled the Buddha Body back!
The greatest taboo in Yunfo was taking the same road back. Even after delivering the Buddha, the return trip had to be made with an empty truck. And that was to say nothing of hauling back only the Buddha Body.
By the time Peng You found out, the shock had sobered him right up.
Dashun had driven a long way before realizing the truck behind him hadn’t kept up. By the time he learned what Wang Cheng had done, it was too late to stop him, so he could only grit his teeth and deliver the Buddha Head first.
I didn’t know if something else had happened on the road, but even Dashun, who was always the steadiest driver, had scraped up his truck.
By the time we arrived at Peng You’s company, the place was in an uproar.
Several truckers were holding back a tall young man.
“Wang Cheng, stop making trouble. This isn’t something you can fix anymore. Just wait for Brother Peng to come back and talk about it!”
“Wasn’t it just one delivery? What’s there to fix?”
The moment Peng You saw him, his temper flared. He strode over in a few quick steps and snapped, “Wang Cheng, did I give you too much face? Didn’t I tell you to get the hell back home? Who told you to come here?”
“Why can’t I come? It’s not like I lost the truck. I’ll just deliver it again, won’t I?
“Besides, my mom told me to come back. She’s going to call you in a bit!”
She was probably an elder in the family, because the moment Peng You heard that, his face darkened even more.
I entered the company behind Peng You. Among his employees were a few old hands who knew me.
“Oh, Brother Long is here!” Old Zhang knew me best and hurried over to fetch me a chair.
I waved him off. “Take me to see the truck.”
Old Zhang froze for a moment, then immediately caught on. “Brother Long, you’re taking this run? That’s great. The rest of us were just worrying ourselves sick over it.”
Old Zhang briskly led me to the yard out back, and Peng You hurried after us.
Wang Cheng and the others followed behind. I could still hear Wang Cheng muttering under his breath.
“Who is he? Why does he get to go and I don’t?”
“You don’t know Long Changdong? He’s been in this business for more than ten years. Back in the day, he specialized in driving trucks through Chongsha. No matter how creepy things got, he never flinched.”
“Tch. How creepy can it be? Aren’t you all just in it for the money?”
“Shut your mouth!” Peng You turned back and glared at him.
